Tyre Query - Goodyear F1 GSD3
Thanks,
the Eagle is a great tire and will offer better wet traction and ride quality than the PS2 but, the PS2 will out perform the Eagle in the dry
My CLK is fitted with 17" AMG alloys, which according to the owners manual are 7.5" wide rims on the front, and 8.5" rims on the back. Unfortunately, and only after buying the vehicle, I noticed that all four rims are fitted with 245/40 ZR17 tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport 2's), when according to the manual, they should be fitted with 225/45 ZR17's on the front and 245/40 ZR17's on the rear. Should I change the front tyres even though I've still got about 5-6mm worth of tread? I was led to believe, by various sources, that the 245's were safe enough on the front, but I would really value the opinion of a tyre expert. I can only assume that the last owner of the car either (1) got a great deal on a set of four 245/40 ZR 17's or (2) the tyre fitter (would have to be an inexperienced one) looked at the rear tyre first, assumed they were all the same, and fitted the same tyre all round??
Thanks,

I would verify that the wheels are indeed different widths .... I have seen some cars that were wrecked or the wheels damaged in some fashion and rear wheels were installed in the front .... if your front wheels are correct put a set of 225's on them and the car will drive better
I queried the tyre size with MB, when one had to be replaced under the 1 year tyre protection warranty, and they said this tyre size was safe enough (I couldn't convince them to replace both with 225/45's). One of our weekly car magazines (autoexpress.co.uk) also indicated that this size was safe.
One of the UK MB forum readers suggested I should put a set of 225/45's on, and keep the existing tyres as spares for the rears. This is what I intend doing.
