Tyre Query - Goodyear F1 GSD3

Any experience with the above tyre? I've currently got Michelin Pilot Sport 2's on 17" AMG alloys (225/45 ZR17 on front, 245/40 ZR17 on rear), but can't say I'm overly impressed with them in the wet/winter time. I was thinking of changing over to the Goodyears, but thought I'd do some research first. The F1's are also a lot friendlier on the wallet!! Have noticed that most Audi TT's are shod with these tyres. Any alternative suggestions?

Thanks,

depends on the weather
first of all no summer tire (or tyre if you prefer) will be impressive in temps below 40 degrees Fahrenheit ..... now on to the question at hand

the Eagle is a great tire and will offer better wet traction and ride quality than the PS2 but, the PS2 will out perform the Eagle in the dry

Re: Tyre Query

Thanks Luke, can I also have your thoughts on the following:-

My CLK is fitted with 17" AMG alloys, which according to the owners manual are 7.5" wide rims on the front, and 8.5" rims on the back. Unfortunately, and only after buying the vehicle, I noticed that all four rims are fitted with 245/40 ZR17 tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport 2's), when according to the manual, they should be fitted with 225/45 ZR17's on the front and 245/40 ZR17's on the rear. Should I change the front tyres even though I've still got about 5-6mm worth of tread? I was led to believe, by various sources, that the 245's were safe enough on the front, but I would really value the opinion of a tyre expert. I can only assume that the last owner of the car either (1) got a great deal on a set of four 245/40 ZR 17's or (2) the tyre fitter (would have to be an inexperienced one) looked at the rear tyre first, assumed they were all the same, and fitted the same tyre all round??

Thanks,

depends on the weather
or option number 3: you bought the car from an idiot

I would verify that the wheels are indeed different widths .... I have seen some cars that were wrecked or the wheels damaged in some fashion and rear wheels were installed in the front .... if your front wheels are correct put a set of 225's on them and the car will drive better

Thumbs up

I actually bought the vehicle from a MB main dealer, under the approved used scheme! You can visibly see the width difference on the attached photo, and the tyre looks a lot better fit on the rears than on the fronts.

I queried the tyre size with MB, when one had to be replaced under the 1 year tyre protection warranty, and they said this tyre size was safe enough (I couldn't convince them to replace both with 225/45's). One of our weekly car magazines (autoexpress.co.uk) also indicated that this size was safe.

One of the UK MB forum readers suggested I should put a set of 225/45's on, and keep the existing tyres as spares for the rears. This is what I intend doing.

The Goodyear Eagle F1's are great tires, especially when you compare the price between that the and Pilot Sports. DO NOT use summer tires in the winter! Go with the Dunlop Wintersport M3's for the winter, I don't see any loss in dry performance and they work great in the snow.

I run 245/45WR-18 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 XL, front, and 275/40YR-18 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, rear, on my car and absolutely LOVE them!

The ride quality is great! I thought I would give up ride quality when I went from my 16" OEM wheels and all season tires because of the lower profile, but the 18" F1s are even better. I couldn't believe it.

Nice, then I wouldn't worry too much about going from 18 to 19 then
