need advice. upgrade to 19" on w210 e55

i found some wheels on ebay, 19x8 et 35mm and 19x9.5 et 40mm. i wanted to install them on my 01 e55. i want to run 245-40 in the front and 285-35 in the rear. does anyone know if this will cause any problems? can someone recomend a tire size. i want to install the widest tire possible. would it be better to run 245-35's and 285-30's?

Very close front fitment. Some tires may rub inside up front using 245 tire. I tried to use a 18x8 et35 with the broad shoulder Nitto NT555 and it touch up front. Went back to OEM Dunlop SP Spot 9000 which has a more rounded shoulder. That max it out up front - no more room inside. You would need 245/35/19 for front.

You should be able to use a 285/30/19 on the back, plenty of room to push the tire/wheel inward in back.

Also check the lug bolt size on the Ebay rims. W210 use 12x1.5. If 14x1.5 like from an S-Class it won't work.

The tire sizes that you list should work fine but they are a little wide for the wheel widths listed. They will work but are the minimum widths. Ideally you should get a 8.5 for the front and a 10 for the back. Running a 285 on a 9.5 will not give you the optimum contact patch. I would recommend just sticking with a 275/30-19. We have run a 255/285 on the new E class no problem.

For the W210 E55 in order to use a 8.5 up front with a 245 tire the offset would have to between et25 or et28. Many wheel shops including Tire Rack speculate that a 8.5 et35 will fit and it will not.

E55 Kev, other than the caliper size, is there a difference in the suspension layout between the E55 and a E430 for example? What exactly is rubbing in your example above? was it the tire rubbing the inner frame, or the tire rubbing the upper suspension mount or rubbing the fender liners?

We have done many E class Mercedes with 8.5 et35 and have not had any problems. I am pretty sure that a couple of those were E55's. Obviously there are many models and diferences between years so it is always hard for rim companies to keep 100% up to date on every fittment. This is what we try to do by using our retail experience to pull from. Since I personally can not recall a problem we have encountered, I need to find out more. I hope you can help.

Here is a link to some photos of w210 cars with 19x8.5 et35 wheels installed. They are running 245/35-19 and have plenty of room. One is a E430 and the other I am not sure. I have to pull the pictures at work and see if I have a rear shot.

As you can see from the side shots of the black e430, any lower of an offset up front would start to push the wheel out from under the fender

Mike, are you sure those W210 used a 245 width and not a 235 width? I got tire rubbing on this nut with a 18x8.0 et35 using a 245/40/18 Nitto 555. Switched back to 245/40/18 Dunlop 9000 on those 18x8 et35 and it was no more room between tire and that nut - very close.

Tire Rack always recommends a 235/40/18. Why does Tirerack.com 'not' recommend a 245/40/18 tire for 18" but recommed a 245/35/19 for same rim width and offset:

18x8.5 et35 - 245/40/18 not recommended for W210 E320
19x8.5 et35 - 245/35/19 is recommended for W210 E320

How could the one fit and the other not according to Tire Rack?

Those are some good questions. We have run 235/40-18 and 235/35-19 on all c class models with 8.5 and et35, no problems. We have run the same wheels on all E class with 245/40-18 and 245/35-19 no problem. This is why your statement puzzled me. I do not understand why Tirerack can recomend one size and not the other. They are effectively the same. Same width, same offset, and same overall diameter. In fact we have noticed more room for forgiveness on the E class than the C class. This is why I asked if there is a suspension difference on the E55 versus the regular E class. To me it looks the same.

Our chrome wheel, the Halo II, is a 18x8 by the way with a offset of 35mm. We have run this as well with 245/40-18 with out incident. Are you sure the wheels you received were not mismarked?

Thanks for the info too.

Mike

Good Question. It's possible, but why would they be? They are the discontinued Antera Type 183 from CEC Wheels. I bent one so they are in the garage needing repair. Once I test fitting this AMG - 17x8.5 et37 and the inside of the rim touch the control arm. So a 8.5 et35 would only be 2mm out:
