Continental Extreme Contact DWS VS. Pirelli P-Zero Nero A/S

Luke,

In a previous thread, I asked if you recommended the new Continental Extreme Contact DWS for my 2005 SL600. You stated, that for my car, I should not get that tire, but rather the Pirelli P-Zero Nero A/S.

My question, is why? What makes the Conti not a good choice? The reason I ask, is that its a bit cheaper and a newer design than the P-Zero. My original Michelin Pilot Sports with 16K miles on them are starting to drive me bonkers with the amount of roar they're producing. I'm looking for a non-directional, mega high performance all-season tire that is quiet, comfortable and able to keep 500hp and 600 lb-ft of torque planted to the road for occasional 150mph + runs.

My guess is that this tire does not exist for all of my requirements, but I'd sure like to get as many of them as possible.

Went with the Contis. It's like driving a different car. The OEM Michelin Pilot Sports had gotten so loud, it sounded like I had a bad wheel bearing.

The Contis got a lot of attention at the MB dealer who installed them. They had never seen them before and seemed very interested by the tread pattern. Looks pretty cool.

depends on the weather
In our head to head testing the new Pirelli P-Zero Nero AS (note it's not the old P-Zero Nero M&S) beat the Continental Extreme Contact DWS. The Continental did out perform the Pirelli on our test track in the wet but the Pirelli won out in the dry in the end the Pirelli won overall because of better ride quality.

Yeah, saw that. I can live with the price savings for 5/100ths of 1 comparison point. Plus the Contis come with a free digital camera that I can quickly ebay for additional cost savings.

I just noticed these. For me, $122 each, which is pretty good. What's the cam worth? I don't see any specs on it.

I find them quiet too. But, I was coming from a set of Michelin Pilot Sports that were just so damn loud, anything would sound quiet after them.

What's so great about those tires that made the dealership go all Lady Gaga over them?

Not sure. They were just saying that they've never seen them before, and that the tread pattern was a bit wild.

Or more likely, it's because I'm a rockstar in these parts. The men want to be me and women want to be with me. It's the burden I bear, but I've gotten used to it.

I agree, it has to be the latter.

You gonna sell me the E when you are ready?

Compared to the stock Conti's they are extremely quiet. And the ride is good, too. I was willing to trade off a little grip for comfort.
