I doubt the slight diff in profile would cause rubbing, however you would be throwing the speedo off. Check the tire size calculator at 1010tires.com for a good answer.

I'm .3 mph too fast with the 225/50/16's.. with the 225/55/16's it says
"Speedometer Difference: 3.044% too slow" "Diameter Difference: 2.96%"

but with the 50's
Speedometer Difference: 0.528% too fast Diameter Difference: 0.53% .3mph isn't huge..

but 2.8mph might be a huge difference..?

Well the rule of thumb is no more than 3% different diameter. Why do you want 55's? If the only problem is the speedo it doesn't really seem to matter, but you will get better mileage!

I'll get better mileage with the 55's? well i thought they were bigger tires in general.. so maybe it would fill my wheel gap a bit more

Bigger diameter = fewer revs per mile = less gas used. And it would fill in the fender gap some as well. Unless you recalibrate the speedo your numbers will not reflect any difference in mileage but you will actually be going farther than the odometer indicates

I don't know if they will fit.. but there are no other losses besides your speedometer being effected by going bigger tires? i mean its the rear only so its not like i'm turning or anything..

I would not think it prudent or safe to have front and rear different overall diameter. I am not an expert, so maybe try to get hold of Luke at Tirerack.
