2) Economy: similar
3) V-8 diesel engine: unavailable in North America.
The straight six has an iron block and the last "non-clean" diesel engine. Read, no urea injection and no expensive filters to replace. This is like the last of the non-catalyst gasoline cars in the 1970s. If you want peace of mind, buy the straight six and ignore the V-6.

I drive an 05 E320 CDI and have had it for 112K miles and love it. 38mpg hwy at around 80mph and will run all day. From my understanding the Bluetech only gets 32mpg hwy with minimal power improvements. It would be nice not to have to use an additive in the low sulfur diesel, but the additive is not very expensive and lasts for atleast 15 fillups.
Great low-end torque from the straight six engines, but I believe I don't get as much top end. You can use off road diesel in the CDI if you are in a bind(it might dye your fuel tank IDK the consequences of this) and will also run on biodiesel. Both are going to be long lasting Mercedes diesels, just depends on your preference for the newer body style or not and the 5speed vs 7speed transmissions.

The change to the V6 (plus 7-speed transmission) was in 2007.
Urea injection did NOT arrive in E-class until 2011, i.e. the current models.

Correct, you can't get LSD anymore and it DID clog EGR systems, i.e. there ARE "ill effects."
2005 CDIs will have burned more than 2006 CDIs, but both may suffer clogged EGR systems.
Don't be so excited about diesel particulate filters--they're actually wonderful. The 2005-2006 cars stink to high heaven and can leave quite a smoke trail when you "stand on" them. The 2007-on models, nothing. Put your face in the exhaust and it smells like a clothes dryer vent. Your chrome exhaust pipe tips won't turn black.

E-320 Bluetec
I love my bluetec. Maybe a little less mpg than the CDI's, but I still have averaged 30.7 over the last 50K miles. I spend a lot of time at 70 mph, and average 32-34 on the highway, have seen over 40 mpg maybe once, and that was on a flat straight road at 55 mph early one morning. Previous poster is right, hardly any smell.

The latest bush fire brigade trucks in New South Wales Australia are fitted with them & they are causing concern that they can cause fires when driving in long dry grass when regenerating .
I am glad that my 220CDI is pre particulate filter.

That is false information.
Soot combined with oil vapor from CCV recirculation is what clogs EGR systems. If you were to route the CCV system to an atmospheric vent instead of closed there would never be any clogging.
That is entirely due to the more aggressive catalytic converter, not the DPF.

Only nuts will sniff their post 2007 diesel exhaust pipes. What is the psychiatric term for this condition? Normal people will choose a used 2005-2006 E320 CDi. All the benefits and few if any of the liabilities that come with politically correct Obama-Al Gore thinking.
Blow some black smoke people!!!!!!!!!!!

240 D: Better still blow some really black smoke with a 1980s MB diesel. I love that You Tube posting of the smoking 140 bhp diesel on a ram.
I love my 2006 because it just slipped through the line. It was 1971 all over again. The era of the last big block engines. America used to be so free! Now it is choking with regulations and looking to the Europeans for PC behaviors. What happened to your go west young man attitude so admired by the world?

The 2005 - 2006 models have the Piezo injectors designed for emission purposes. These injectors were being tested out in these model years without the trashy filters so they get all the power increases without the power robbing filters.
Perfection.

2006 E320 CDI 235 hp 420 ft tq
All I know is both are better than Gassers.
And if you are going to add power at this time its easier to add power to the 05's and the 06's.
I used Upsolute to re-map my ECU and it added 35 hp and 51 ft lbs tq.
