Two Fuel Pumps in 2 Years

All,

I have to replace my fuel pump AGAIN after only 22 months. I can't believe that MB OEM Bosch fuel pumps only last this long! On top of that MBUSA, the dealer where I bought the pump, and Bosch all tell me its out of warranty and that they won't help! MB warranties their BATTERIES longer than a fuel pump.

This is going to be the third pump that I have put into the car (its the 2007 model)!!!!!!!! Has anybody else had bad luck like this? The things I have done since purchasing it in 2014, and only putting 20k miles on it (bought it with 75k):

Transmission Valve Body - $1900 done by MB
Radiator Fan - $400, part only
2 Fuel Pumps - $250 each, part only
Camshaft Position Sensor Magnets - 4@ $25 each, parts only
Tumble Flap Actuator is broken too, I don't plan to fix it, as I never get near 3500 RPMs

I am really shocked that I have had SOOOOO many issues. I do all the regular PM and keep my ear to the ground on pretty much everything.

Anybody else have horror stories?

Do you routinely run the car below a 1/4 tank of fuel? That's usually the cause of premature pump failures, overheating due to lack of fuel in the tank.

The replacement parts just aren't that great though, and fuel pumps, of every brand and in every car, fail pretty often.

I sure do, about 1/4 of the time. Ha. And I understand pumps fail, I understand things happen, but I will be on pump 3, and the car doesn't even have 100k on it. And the last pump has lasted 10k miles....

im more surprised MB doesn't back their own OEM parts purchased from the dealer

Mine lasted 220K miles, M111. And yeah, I dropped 200 bucks on a MB genuine vs aftermarket.
M272 engine though, filter is in the tank and expensive.
Did you replace it when you replaced the pump?

Don't feel too bad, some versions of the E Class (possibly others?) with M272 engine (E85) requires replacing the whole gas tank just to replace the fuel pump, MB doesn't sell separately. My mechanic had fun explaining THAT to his customer.

From my understanding, the fuel filter is built into the pump itself. I have two sending units, one of the left and one on the right. My right side unit has a level sensor, filter, and pump all in one. When I get the pump, its an entire assembly.

Its an easy DIY job and pelican parts has a good write up. I just wish I would have known that before having it towed and paying a diagnostic fee, which I wouldn't have done if I had assumed at all it was the pump.

Don't run the car as low on fuel all the time and your pump will be much happier.

MB does offer a warranty, 12mo/12k miles usually. You had the pump for almost 2 years. At what point is the dealer allowed to stop being responsible? Gotta draw the line somewhere.

And never fill up at a service station while a tanker is discharging & stirring up the tank bottoms. Small rust particles get through the filter & stick to the flooded pump magnets until the pump seizes!

I just bought a pump from pelican, and will changing it out in the next few days. 2007 c280 4matic.

Mine was different than what was shown in the Hayes manual and other online places. Seems like the C280 is different from the c230.

I have ran all 14 of my cars (in my lifetime) from completely full to reading empty and never had a fuel pump issue, this includes a W203, W211, and two W204s. I see this information doled out on the forums all the time, but I think the risk is extremely overstated. College students who keep their cars on E at all times would be replacing fuel filters left and right.

OP are you using E85?
