E320 5 speed swap help
I want to do a 5 speed swap in my 95 e320. A local salvage has a 90 190e with a manual trans. Will the 4 cal trans work? If not, what model should work?

What do you mean, 4 cal transmission?
The models that do work for sure are the dogleg 5 speed out of the 190 E AMG cars, as well as the 5 speed off of the 190 E 2.6.

I'm not sure if any 4 cyl tranny besides the 2.3/2.5 AMG doglegs would work. I do know that the standard 5 speed off of the 6 cylinder 2.6 works, as does the dogleg.
I did this swap last year, and the tranny I used was the standard W124 300E 5 speed. Those came here. The 300E-24V and E320 are the same engine besides overboring and EFI, so the transmissions do fit.
Therefore, the transmissions that will fit for SURE on your E320 are:
Dogleg out of 2.3/2.5 AMG,
Standard 190E 2.6 5 speed,
standard E320 manual which is identical to the 2.6, however some E320 Sportlines came with the same dogleg out of the AMG 190E's.
Remember, you need to also change your flywheel, install the 3 pedal setup, buy a pressure plate, etc... The best way to do this is to purchase an entire 2.6 assembly, if the W124 5 speed assembly isn't available.
4 speed trannies came on the older Mercs, but I don't think they fit, besides that they suck.

Oh, and you'll notice a significant performance upgrade when you swap to manual, too.
The 5 speed automatic that came on the M104s draw 30% of the engine's power to the wheels, while the manual draws 15%.
220 - 30% = ~155whp
220 - 15% = ~187whp
I consider that a very good performance mod, don't you? :P

What would this transmission cost down there?
So tell me oh great Shoomakan, besides the obvious parts, what in all do I need to get from the salvaged car.
And don't me a smartass. :P
Here's the thread I posted a long time ago asking that very question:

BSMWUK had it down pat. Ask him for input. Remember what he said about the flywheel, it applies to you.

If you are thinking of it do the swap. I recently bought a wrecked 320 with a manual tranny and used it as a donor car so it was an easy swap. Result is fantastic! Best is the longer legs so lower revs at cruising speeds. Manual and auto share same ratios for 1st through 4th and the manual has a 5th gear - makes all the difference.
