2012 GL450 tire change and TPMS sensor
I've a 2012 GL450 that I imported from US to Canada last year and now I'm looking at changing the factory Conti tires on it. It looks like Toyo Versado CUV 275/55/R19 might be a decent choice based on some of the posts I've seen online. Currently, the wheels have the hard TPMS value and I can see the tire pressure in the console on the dashboard (even after CDN MB dealer changed the instrument cluster etc.), so I'm assuming I've the TPMS sensors on the GL.
What I'm wondering is that if I get the tires changed (and put on the original rims), do I need to buy new TPMS sensors for the new tires? Or would I be able to use the existing TPMS sensors but will need to get them reprogrammed from the MB dealer? I'm looking at getting the tire change done at a local shop and not the MB dealer to save some $, so just wanted to do find out about this since the local tire shop cannot program TPMS.

My plan is to use the existing MB factory rims that came with the GL and put on the new Toyo tires on them. In this scenario is there a transplant/new sensors required + programming?

i am missing something. does your mb factory rims have tpms in them already?
if so - the sensors should be field- recognized by your vehicle. the reset procedure is executed via the instrument cluster menus
just make sure the old sensors are not in the vicinity as this will confuse the tpms receiver

I believe it does have tpms since I can see the tire pressure in the console on the dashboard and the wheels have the hard TPMS value (so assuming its there).
When you suggested "just make sure the old sensors are not in the vicinity as this will confuse the tpms receiver" I'm concluding that means that I will need a complete new set of sensors for the new tires even though I plan to mount them on the existing factory rims? Thanks.

Sorry, yes I meant Valve.
I'm just as confused ....basically what I'm trying to figure out is that if I keep original factory MB rims that are on the GL and get new tires mounted on these same rims, do I need to worry about anything related to tpms sensors (need new, reprogram from dealer etc)? Hope that clarifies it! Thx

No. Tpms is tire- agnostic. No problem there. Just make sure shop knows how to mount and dismount tires so they don't hurt the tpms. The sensors are close to the bead so they can be broken easily.

Thanks. So sounds like I don't need to get new sensors then. Would I still need to do the reset procedure that you had mentioned above in your post when the new tires on mounted on the existing rims? (I'm assuming I can do this procedure myself and don't need the dealer/shop to do it for me).

I've changed tires many times in a few different ML's. Since you are keeping the rims you don't need to do anything. Just hop in and enjoy your new tires. The sensors don't care about the new rubber and will work fine. No replacement or reset necessary
