ML400 Running Boards

Have a 2105 ML400 with running boards (unlit). I don't care for them. Can they be removed and replaced with the regular side skirts? Is this just a bolt on and off operation? Thanks. Also, are the regular side skirts sold painted?

Yes they can. I am told you have to replace the jack points also. Maybe some other stuff. Dealers have done it from time to time and moved the parts from 1 car to another for a sale reason.

I did this on my ml 550 last year. Needed 2 plastic jack point inserts on each side since my sport body kit rocker panel is a different thickness then the older running boards. But ask to see which rocker panels you need. Sport and non sport are different.

AMG Sport skirts look like they have a twist in them longitudinally, but that's because they have a "dart" molded into them at each end, whose points don't line up point to point towards the middle. You'll see the difference when you look at an AMG vs a non AMG sport pkg equipped vehicle.

The side steps really are too shallow to be of any use other than making it harder for a guy to get in as the sill is already too wide and in conjunction with the running boards places you too far away from the seat, (IMHO) but many people choose to have them. They are resalable, and do have some resale value.

Running Boards

I took my running boards off and purchased a used set of the standard rockers. I had a local body shop remove the running boards and install the standard rockers. When he took them off he had to remove the running board rubber jack pads. The rubber jack pads for the running board are wider and deeper than the standard jack pads. But once you look at them you can see they are two piece with the running board pad snapped onto the standard pad. I was able to pull them apart ( they just snap together) and use the smaller part of the pad as a jack pad for the standard rockers. I took the standard back running boards and sanded and painted them white, to look like the AMG sport boards.

I still have my running boards for sale.
