The AMG GT is a Technical Marvel

Last week we brought you the noise from the new AMG GT. We all liked it around here. It wasn’t muffled by the turbos, which was pleasantly surprising. Now Mercedes has released a small video describing the new engine, and it’s honestly nothing short of brilliant. Take a peak.

Back? Yeah, it’s amazing. The first part that really grabbed me was the new oil reservoir located on the side of the engine, rather than under the engine itself. Mercedes worked out a race-proven technology, that of a dry-sump system that pumps oil into the engine. With that, the engine can be lowered farther toward the ground to improve the car’s center of gravity. What that does is improve weight transfer when accelerating and decelerating; it also improves overall balance through corners. The lower the car’s center of gravity, the less roll you get through the corners. The less roll, the faster you can dive into the corner, and the faster you can get out of it.

The next fascinating part of this engine is the bi-turbo design. Using principles Mercedes has devised through building its new Formula 1 engine, the turbo setup is actually inside the block of the engine, thereby reducing the time for the turbos to spool up, giving the car faster acceleration and a more linear torque curve.

While it may not be the quantum leap in design and performance Mercedes bills it to be, it is truly an innovative car, and the fun is not over. Because the car hasn’t been fully revealed yet, expect to see more of these tidbits pop up leading up to the car’s launch later this year. Personally, I can’t wait to see what other stuff they crammed into this sports car. Who knows, by then, I might be on the press launch and be able to tell you exactly what this car is made of.
