Mercedes-AMG C63 S Vs. BMW M3 Vs. Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

Legendary drag race is topped off with a braking and drift battle.

The new Alfa Giulia’s performance variant Quadrifoglio is now available for testing. So Carwow decided to line it up against the best comers from Germany, namely the BMW M3 and the Mercedes AMG C63 S. Both have been exhaustively tested against each other, but it’s always good fun to knock them up against new competition. In this case, the trio are matched up in a drag race, a stopping distance challenge, and an impromptu drifting competition. Cause what good is competing against each other in the enthusiast sedan market if they aren’t going to face off on the track?

You’re right in thinking that very few of these cars will actually see time on the race track. However, good on-track mannerisms usually translate to fun street driving.

In the first test, the Mercedes does not fare well. But placing third in a drag race with this group is still pretty respectable. The Merc managed a 12.6-second quarter-mile time, which is plenty quick for any giant family sedan. But a traction-limited launch also led to the C63 S setting a disappointing 4.3 second 0-60 time.

In the straight line braking competition, the Mercedes was actually able to panic stop from 70 mph in the shortest distance. The BMW and Alfa were fitted with expensive carbon ceramic brakes, but the C63 S stopped shorter with just cast iron rotors.

Yet it’s the drifting competition that really gets us excited. The Mercedes managed the largest drift angle of any of these three sporty sedans. It’s the biggest and heaviest of the bunch, and certainly the most comfortable, but it still manages to get wild when you want. The trade-off is that it’s a few tenths slower in the quarter-mile. But hey, the C63 S can drift better and stop shorter. That sounds like a win to us.
