Future of the Taxi: Uber Buying 100,000 Autonomous S-class Sedans

It is really amazing to think that the next generation of drivers — who are currently soiling diapers — may grow up in a world where driverless cars are as regular as smartphones. We’ve already seen that Mercedes is strikingly close to making autonomous driving a reality. We’ve recently covered the emerging technology in the new E-class, and everyone from the English to the Aussies seem convinced we are very close to having driverless cars.

Now, the ride-share company Uber reportedly wants in. In a deal valued at over $11.2 Billion USD, Uber plans on buying 100,000 autonomous S-class units from Mercedes. That’s equal parts interesting and fascinating. There’s not too many regulations in place that currently allow autonomous driving to take place, and there’s plenty of red-tape to cut through still. But just as Uber has revolutionized the taxi industry, they may revolutionize it once more.

Will the Uber taxis make drivers obsolete? And what is to limit it to just the S-class? Can this affect the trucking industry as well?
