G-Wagen & Unimog Flex For the Camera in Awesome Off-roading Video

By -

One’s a military machine now living in glamor, the other a blue-collar workhorse. Both show off their trail-bashing skills for the camera.

Forty years ago, Mercedes introduced a rugged machine ready to handle the front lines of war, in the form of the Gelandewagen. Eventually, the glitz and glamor of the high street came calling, where the G-Wagen protects its occupants from intruding eyes to this day.

Sixty years ago, Mercedes emerged from the ruins of World War II with the help of a hardy, blue-collar machine dubbed the “Universal-Motorgerät” before simplifying its name as Unimog. The workhorse has since done everything from hauling hay to putting out fires, all just a day’s work for the beloved, no-nonsense machine. And recently, it and the G-Wagen gathered before Motor1 for a celebratory demonstration of all they can do in the great outdoors.

“The G-Class has always stayed true to itself over the decades: from the edgy profile to the hallmark noise when the door is clanged shut,” G-Class product chief Peter Schoren said in the related press release. “At the same time, it has constantly evolved technologically. The current model is the best G-Class of all time in all aspects – regardless of whether we are talking about the comfort, the off-road capabilities or the agility on the road”.

“In a certain sense, our Mercedes-Benz Unimog vehicles are a class by themselves,” added Mercedes Special Trucks marketing boss Dr. Ralf Rocher, “specialists for the exceptional jobs, with a diverse range of qualities for any conceivable mission. The superior handling of our legendary short-nose Unimogs only comes fully to the fore on the most demanding sections of an off-road route. Our all-round talent also delivers benchmarks in terms of efficiency, service life expectancy and maintenance costs”.

The G-Wagen/Unimog summit took place on a special off-road course, giving each plenty of things to take on. Whether it’s climbing steep steel bridges or a set of stairs, fjording ponds or scrambling over rocks and mud, or simply hitting the road, both of these tough legends prove they’re capable of nearly everything thrown at them.

There’s simply nothing more astounding than seeing the G-Wagen and Unimog flex their muscles the only way they know how. We’re just happy both exist to this day.

Cameron Aubernon's path to automotive journalism began in the early New '10s. Back then, a friend of hers thought she was an independent fashion blogger.

Aubernon wasn't, so she became one, covering fashion in her own way for the next few years.

From there, she's written for: Louisville.com/Louisville Magazine, Insider Louisville, The Voice-Tribune/The Voice, TOPS Louisville, Jeffersontown Magazine, Dispatches Europe, The Truth About Cars, Automotive News, Yahoo Autos, RideApart, Hagerty, and Street Trucks.

Aubernon also served as the editor-in-chief of a short-lived online society publication in Louisville, Kentucky, interned at the city's NPR affiliate, WFPL-FM, and was the de facto publicist-in-residence for a communal art space near the University of Louisville.

Aubernon is a member of the International Motor Press Association, and the Washington Automotive Press Association.
