On the heels of launching the AMG GT R, Mercedes Customer Sport has announced the AMG GT4 racer. FiA’s production-based class that bears the same GT4 name has seen other manufactures get involved, with similar factory-built GT4 racers such as the Porsche Cayman, Ford Mustang, and McLaren 570S.

AMG has already had success with its AMG GT3 program, which features even more racing modifications than the GT4 cars, which are mostly production-based. A car in this class would also be able to compete in a number of sanctions world-wide.

With this GT4 being “turn-key,” it offers the ability for pro and amateur teams to simply get straight to racing, as all of the safety equipment will be standard fare at the time of purchase.

Technical details have yet to be released, and those details might change depending on which sanction you will be running. However, you can be sure that AMG’s 4.0 twin-turbo V8 will reside under the hood. A paddle shift transmission will also be your gear-changer of choice.

The advent of factory racers will only benefit the customer in the long-run. With race cars essentially being a test-bed for new technology and features, production cars down the line will benefit from the go-faster advancements. Better, safer, and faster cars, all in the pursuit of speed — we’re in!
