transmission suggestions for a 1984 190e 2.3

Hi eveyone, I have an 1984 2.3 w201. It is an automatic and there has been no upgrades done to the transmission. The transmission shifts hard and I have noticed it seeming to slip here and there, the car has just 103,000 miles. I have always enjoyed driving manual transmission cars and I was wondering just how hard it would be to change the auto out for a manual. I am not looking to spend a whole lot of money and would even be interested in doing the work myself................ Also The transmisson in the car now which eveyone knows revs at pretty high RPM's at fast speeds, I was wondering if another transmission either being auto or manual could have more gears like a six speed which would cause the car to run at lower RPM's at higher speeds. If there are any transmisson upgrades that would help out I might be interested in going that route as well. You guys know alot more than me so the advice would really help me out! Thanks!

The transmisisons for the M102 engine and M103 (six cylinder) will bolt up, but they are all 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual trans, no 6 speeds. Some miscellaneous work will need to be done to mount it, but nothing major or requiring custom fabrication.

Thanks! Is there any aftermarket manual transmissions that anyone would recommend maybe even a six speed?

While there are aftermarket parts, I'm not aware of whole transmission assemblies that are "bolt up" applications for a W201.

Either here or on 190 Revolution a guy made a post on the whole procedure on how he changed out the automatic to a manual, everything he needed, and what troubles were in the way. Search around, it's an excellent write up. The cost was around $1,500 and I think he did the swap himself.
