LCD temp gauge installation
#4
Rosella, I'm replacing on my radio and have the central dash loose. I'm not looking forward to removing the instrument cluster as must be done for the LCD R&R. I do know the front speaker grills each have 2 tiny philips screws retaining them. Once removed there is a 6mm or 7mm or so bolt which will need to be removed. In trying to remove the front speakers I took one out a bolt only to realize it holds the upper part of the dash in place. With some prying I found the front speakers just stuck in place with double sided sticky tape and the speakers just required a bit of prying.
What scares me about working around the dash are the warnings about accidentally setting off the air bag.
My 1993 Temp LCD is losing fluid, hence readability, on the right side and will need replacement as well. Where did you get yours and how much did it cost. Thanks.

To remove the IC you need some sort of hooks. MB has specific hooks for the IC, but you can make some out of wire coat hangers. Straighten the hanger and then bend the last 1/4-3/8 inch to 90 degrees. Place one hook on either side of the IC and find a place for them to hook into (isn't really a specific spot) and pull out (it will be tough) Once it is out enough to get a hand back start to disconnect all the connectors, the toughest one is the cable for the speedo. You can disconnect the speedo cable from the transmission, but it isn't required.

Gull, good info. I googled -mercedes instrument cluster hooks removal- and found hooks on ebay plus articles about removing the IC. It appears like all MB from that era used the same technique and removal hook tools. Wild and scarry.
According to tool company http://www.shoptoolsshoptools.com/sh...+Removal+Hooks
the hooks are available in two lengths. The shorter 4.5" are for the W107, W116, W123, W124, W126, W140, W201, while newer cars use 7" reach hooks. There is a set of hooks on ebay now but I won't link them because the listing will evaporate.
I think a good plan would be to replace all bulbs once the IC was out.

Don't be afraid to pull hard, just make sure you have a good grip on the back of the cluster so you don't have the hook slip off and damage anything. You can work it out one side then the other.

Thank you
Thank very much Gullwing and Paul for your input on this topic. I'm sorry for my late response. I'll be getting into this small project in the next week or so and will post how it goes.
Paul, I found the LCD instrument on Ebay and paid $40 for it. I've seen them turn up on there from time to time. I hope you've found one by now though.
Once again thanks

Cluster removal
I pull them out from the passenger side first (I only use one hook - have the factory tools, but just use one now) - remember to go in from the bottom corner, twist the tool, and you will feel it engage as you pull it out a little - pull out the right side, and then go at the left - you need to pull off the connectors and speedo cable on its way out, but it's really quick and easy once you've done it a time or two. I put a little bit of grease on the outside sealing surface (just the little 1mm ring around the edge) to make it easy to pop in and out next time (I use krytox, but a good synthetic grease should do just fine) - just enough to "wet" the surface - my clusters are easy to pop out now.
