W201 - 190e wiper issue.
Hi all, new to the forums and first post, a problem of course. I have a 1992 190e wiper problem. The wiper work’s correctly with just the ignition on (parks, intermittent works, also speed 1 and 2). However when you start the car the wiper just keeps on going (combination switch set to off) and will not stop unless you turn off the car again. What’s the most likely culprit- combination switch? Relay? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I live in Ireland and it rains a lot! Many thanks.

Welcome. I would suggest you post your question in the W201 section of the forum where 190E owners can help you with your wiper issue. The new member check in doesn't answer mechanical questions. You can find the W201 section by scrolling down the main forum page. Hope this helps.

I guess I don't understand why you'd have the wiper on without starting the car. Doing that might be your problem. I've never even tried that with my 190E. Try starting the car without having the wiper on at the time you start the car. Once you start the car, then turn the wiper on and see if you can then shut the wiper off.

190Efan, I believe the wiper runs normally with ignition on engine off. When you crank the engine it will momentarily stop (not sure why, could be severe voltage drop during cranking) but after the car starts it keeps running. And of course the combination switch can shut it off after the car starts.
I did not understand one explanation though. Is this the sequence?
Case A:
(1) Wiper switch on with ignition on engine off. Wiper running
(2) After you turn the engine off with the wiper running you can not turn the wiper off (the wiper control is lost)
Or is it Case B:
(1) Wiper switch off
(2) Start the engine and the wiper start running out of nowhere and you have no control with the combination switch.

You should not be turning on the wiper before you actually start the car. Doing so will cause a power strain. You should also not be turning the wiper on before you squirt some windshield wiper fluid onto the windshield or it's actually raining. This is so you don't scratch the windshield. I don't honestly think you have a problem.

Hi there dolucasi,
Many thanks for following up - Your Question is correct in Case B -
I did not understand one explanation though. Is this the sequence?
Case A:
(1) Wiper switch on with ignition on engine off. Wiper running
(2) After you turn the engine off with the wiper running you can not turn the wiper off (the wiper control is lost) - No, Engine off - Wiper stops @ whatever location you turned off the Engine
Or is it Case B:
(1) Wiper switch off
(2) Start the engine and the wiper start running out of nowhere and you have no control with the combination switch. - Correct - Switch in Position 0 - Wiper will start once engine starts.
190EAlso - I only use the wiper when raining - but as it Runs all the time - had to try different sequences to see what conditions/positions may be impacting.
Many thanks all for looking into this.

I have not seen this problem posted before but it sounds like a relay issue.
I would try one little experiment.
Start the car and turn on all electrical high consumption appliances:
(1) Rear window defroster
(2) Headlights on High Beam
(3) Heater fan on the highest
Switch the combination wiper switch on and off. Does this fix the problem at all?

You need to NOT put the wiper on before you start your car, even if it's already raining. Start your car first and then put the wiper on. By putting the wiper on before you start your car, you're interfering with the wiper sequencing. My engineer father always taught me to never start the car with any power draining accessories on before you start the car. That's what I do with my 190 and I've never had a problem.
