Current COMAND SW
The ability to display ETA below the map while navigating was added for Model Year 2007. The software needs to be upgraded by your dealer to enable this on previous units. Not certain if there are additional advantages (with or without navigation) to upgrading as I have not had hands on yet it's been a while since I last visited a dealer.
W211 (E) and C219 (CLS):
USA COMAND head unit software update - Disc # W211 589 14 22 00 (SW: 22.100, 46/06) was released 1/18/07
EU update: Disc #W211 589 13 22 00 (SW: 21.090, 30/06) released 1/18/07

These are possibly the other modifications??
blocked Bluetooth from the head unit
- wrote out the SMTP / POP client
- wrote out the internal address book
- enabled better operation with linguatronic
- enabled better phone book lookup by name spelling
- disabled the keypad workaround for "tv in motion"
I have NO knowledge whatsoever as to whether these are correct.

The CLS has been near perfect. My only reason to stop at a dealership is to chat, gossip, grab a complimentary Starbucks …you know, fill the void between errands and chores if the dealership happens to be on my route. Maintenance is but once a year however, if I find the time maybe I will stop in and actually have the upgrade applied as to better be able to answer questions about it.

I asked my SA about an update about 3 months ago. He said that it couldn't be done. Don't know if it really couldn't be upgraded, if the software update wasn't yet available, or he just didn't want to do it. It would also be great to get the radio preset scanning feature the '07s have!

Once the CD has carried out the upgrade you will have the option to have the ETA as the main screen or one of the other options.

My take, all COMAND heads units with navigation regardless of navigation disc installed. Of course, Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) function would require navigation (inclusive of navigation disc). MY07 should already have the newest version installed but if delivery was taken early on I would check to see if you have the ETA function mentioned or have your dealer confirm your software version.
Do you have an MB part number or a TSB number I can reference?

Sorry I can't be more helpful but I can give you the details of my dealership that ordered the part with those numbers?

I can'tcomment on your dealers competance or otherwise but the part numbers that have already been posted are taken off the wrapping from the CD. They are Mercedes-Benz numbers.

I normally refer to this page for the CD/DVD info, I know John already is familiar with this one.

I'm not familiar with part numbers but could it be that this part isn't a normal spare part but "a service tool" instead? I've seen that mentioned e.g. for the engine "dipstick" for cars that don't have one. The parts guy should do a different search in this case.

He asked me if I was sure that it would work on my ’06 and I said that I was fairly sure. So I guess that I should either go get the disk or have the first dealership do the upgrade for $40. What is the upgrade process if you do it by disk? I seem to remember that I read somewhere that it would be a matter of putting in the disk in the COMAND’s CD drive and then the upgrade would happen. Does that make sense? –or should I let the dealership do the work?

I thought the software get updated automagically when you put in a newer nav DVD. When I went from 2005.3 to 2006.2, the comand showed updating....
So what does this software actually update? And shouldn't MB do this for free anyway? As our cars are under factory warranty?

The dealer that has offered to install it for $40 is making a tidy profit. The $9.95 is about right. The disc comes with instructions for the technician to install.
Basically you press three buttons which are listed on the CD cover. The COMAND asks for the service disc to be installed. This update will take 10 - 15 minutes and when completed it automatically ejects the Cd. You are then told to get out the vehicle and lock it. This then activates the software. 10 minutes later, unlock the car, go to Map and press the option Display and hopefully you will get the Option screen.
It does not matter what version of the mapping software we have, this upgrade is a completely seperate issue.
Hopefully that has answered the questions.

John

He told me that it would be $9.95+ tax. At about the same time the SA from the first dealership called and told me that it is an upgrade done through the StarDiag computer and that could do the upgrade for $40. He asked me if I was sure that it would work on my ’06 and I said that I was fairly sure. So I guess that I should either go get the disk or have the first dealership do the upgrade for $40. My SA/lead tech said cost free - considered update under warranty. Although not specific to my VIN the update can and will be installed without worry of malfunction. BTW, service disc was located immediately via part # posted. I suggest checking with “all” your local dealers for their feedback as to cost, availability, and successful application even if not specific to your VIN.
