New GT55, thoughts from a previous C63s owner

Hi gang, thought I was done with AMG for a bit when I sold my c63s in 2022 but I'm back! I traded that in for a manual CT5V blackwing which ended up having oil issues and itself got traded in 2 years later for a Hummer EV SUV. I really liked the hummer but it's now been at the dealership for 2 months and is on it's way to being lemon'd. Don't think I can trust another GM vehicle again. Anyways, I took the opportunity to move back into the sports car realm and started looking at 4 seat 2 door coupes (need back seats for the kiddos). Not a lot of options so it was between some LC500's and AMG GT's. Found a killer deal on this lightly used 24 GT55 that I ended up picking up last weekend.

I'll start with some initial positives and follow with some grievances in bullet form coming from an old AMG owner...
1) Love love love how it looks inside and out! Interior cockpit is such a huge refreshing difference coming from the blackwing and hummer. Mercedes has simply been killing it these days. They're just light years ahead of the other euro manufacturers IMO. The whole experience sitting in the car from the materials, vents, ambient colors is mesmerizing. I do wish it had more buttons, at least for previous/next tracks and volume but it's not a big deal.
2) So much practical space in here! It's so nice to be able to travel with both kids, wife, and plenty of luggage in the back.
3) Shifts! The firm "thud" on upshifts are just music to my ears and so satisfying. Just need to get the pops and burbles on downshifts to match with an aftermarket exhaust like I did with my old c63s and I'll be set.

Minor grievances...
1) Why did they get rid of the little electric seat belt gizmo that moves the belt forward for easier access when you close the door! As someone with a muscular upper body it's kind of a pain to reach now.
2) Killing me that I can't start the car in a mode that has the valves open. Which also brings me to the fact that the car is too quiet! It's in dire need of an exhaust but looks like the options are slim right now. Looking forward to putting on the first catback that comes out on the market.
3) I still don't like that the remote start in a Mercedes turns the engine off the moment you open a door. I get the theory behind it but there's no additional safety that just keeping it locked until the key is in proximity wouldn't utilize.
4) I think this is just me needing to fiddle around more but I'm only 6ft tall and I feel cramped in the cockpit. I feel like I should be able to move the seat further back than I can, for now I'm just bending my knees to make it work. Is this just me? No way anyone 6'3 or taller could fit comfortably in this car the way it is right now.

In any case I'm loving the car so far. Looking forward to growing into it with the rest of yall here. Without much further ado here she is...

Welcome to the fold here...

I agree the exhaust is not what the hot V should be. I actually removed the rear cans completely and gained some decent volume. And I added the Renntech Valve controller to keep those fk'ers open all the time. I would not go cat back exhaust as the OEM one is not too restrictive so replacing it with something slightly less noise cancelling may not do the trick. Have no rear mufflers, this car to me is still to quiet. Another thing for me was the car sat too high and the beautiful wheels were to inward so I added Brabus springs and H&R spacers.

Any change in ride comfort with the Brabus springs?

For your #2 grievance. If you enter accessory mode by pressing the start button with your foot off the brake you can change the drive mode or press the exhaust button. Then put your foot on the brake and press the start button again, and voila, starting the car with the valves open!

Sweet ride, enjoy!!

Zero, Nada... maybe an ever so slight bit more soft in Sport Plus. I drove home 40 miles after the drop and forgot about that I had it lowered. I then, by design didnt the drive the car for a week so I would forget it was dropped and took normal routes with no discernable changes. I waited about 200 miles for proper settling and had my local MB service center align it within spec.

Full disclaimer: I would have got the KW HAS but it was backordered and Im an impatient SOB. But the Brabus springs (Eibach private label) are just fine and not that it matters but they were half the price.

Hmm, I like what you've done. So did you have a shop custom fab a muffler bypass or how did you go about it? I guess the renntech sport mufflers would be a good option too if the rest of the pipes are already optimized?

I thought I tried this and wasn't able to change it, I'll give it another go when I get back on the road here in a few hours. Thanks!

My local chop did it. They just cut the mufflers out and fabricated the Y pipe to the valves ... I passed on the RT part since they are mufflers and this is less restrictive and I still want more noise. RT would go the opposite way IMHO.

Man, I might end up doing this as well. Back with the blackwing I actually had them fabricate some magnaflows in a custom set up with what they had done to a zr1 in the past. There was no good aftermarket option for that car as well. In this case I’d definitely go with a performance muffler shop and not just some random place like I did with the blackwing. How much did they charge you for it? Already know I’m going to be getting hit with the amg gt premium. Also mind posting a vid of what it sounds like for us here in exhaust limbo lol

Video might be tough since Im not driving the car for a few weeks but will do my best...

My guy is straight chop style in Santa Ana = 300 but no exhaust leaks

The Renntech Valve Controller does make a difference. You can do the ACC start up mod so that its open on firing but once you start driving in low rpms the valves do shut and open based on the rpm range. Mine never close ever.

Here is a vid of the RT rear can section = not loud enough vs stock.

Its on the SL but same sht

Yeah I think the renntech controller makes a pretty good difference. I haven't touched my mufflers and not sure I will as I am pretty happy with the controller
I just like vic, lowered mine as well but used the kw set up. One thing I like about the kw is they are 100% adjustable. So you can tweak your right height to exactly where you like it. I have been having carbon aero being made in Poland for the last few months. They finished it this week so it will ship next week. The front splitter is like the black series and drops my front clearance by 1.5 in. I will raise it up by 1.5 as I install all the aero.

The EVM does make a difference because at low RPMs, even in Sport+ mode, the exhaust valves are not fully open, only at high rpms does it open up but once the rpm drops again, it closes back up again, here is an example (not the same vehicle at all but the idea is the same) on exhaust valves open and off mode.

I'm thinking of removing the mufflers, I already have the RT valve module,
Is a noticeable difference with the mufflers removed?

You probably are asking me as im the one that has done it (this isnt my thread) and I have no drone. Drone is subjective though; I have more throaty rumble at the down low and of course I have the the VC too. The sound from a decibel perspective is probably maxed out unless I do dp's and thats not in the cards for me.

Ordered the EVM! Hoping to ride this mod out for a while so I have something to look forward to when (following your footsteps) and doing a muffler delete later down the road.

Next up is some appearance work. I really want a discrete spoiler like the Brabus one that I recently saw online. I also have a $1k ceramic coating package that I have sitting before I got this car with the matte paint. I’m reading both ways, some places say not to mess with ceramic on matte cars.

I'm deleting my mufflers tomorrow, I already have the RT module, and just ordered the racechip piggy back, they have a decent discount on them.
