????? Update mode? are you sure you have the right item for your car?
the only update I am aware of is the NAV and its a DVD that automatically loads when you put it in. IT puts in new firmware.. on 2004 thru 2006 W220's

Looks like we're making some progress toward a resolution to this question at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/audi...rade-mode.html.

Diesel Benz has confirmed that disc W211 589 15 22 00 should be the correct COMAND firmware update DVD for a W220 COMAND APS, even though it has a W211 part number and is used to update the W211 COMAND. I stand by my suggestion that you may have better luck buying the disc by its part number (it is likely carried in the "tool" catalog, not the "parts" catalog) than burning the disc yourself from a web download.

As I understand it, our COMANDs should begin the update automatically - and do not require entering the engineering mode. The file that is missing between the download version and the OE disc may be the file that starts the update automatically (that is speculation on my part - I don't know for sure). A prior post had pointed out that an init file of some kind was absent in the download version.

There is a lot of information in the imbedded links reachable through the link I provided above - I'm not going to take the time to type it all out here. But we may be nearing the answer to the ultimate question: How do I get ETA and phone signal strength to display on my W220 MOST COMAND?

Please continue to provide feedback.

Thanks a lot. I was able to update the navigation processor with W211 589 15 22 00 (via nav dvd hardware in trunk). After that I reloaded my 2005.3 map disk but I still can not see ETA etc. Are these features awailable only in 2007/2008 navigation disks or previous ones too?
Do I still need to update the command head software with W211 589 14 22 00 on the cd unit at the command head(not in trunk). Otherwise I will just buy the navteq dvd NTG1-7.0 from your previous post.

Thanks again

The procedure at post #9 at https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w211/212945-comand-service-menu-access.html may help. If the update was accepted, you should have a choice of the ETA/signal strength, geographic coordinates/satellites, or nothing at all in the ribbon on the bottom of the display.

Where did you download the COMAND update?

By "I have it" are you referring to a successful update so that you now show ETA and signal strength, or are you referring to having the update disc?

If you successfully completed the upgrade and have ETA, etc., can you (or your passenger) still input destinations while in motion?

We worked through this in parallel posts on BenzWorld and here, so I'm going to bring what I believe is the final solution - pending verification - over from the BenzWorld posts (though most of the information needed had been posted in MBWorld; this just brings it together).

There are two different situations.

Situation one is where the owner buys a new nav DVD but gets a "disc not recognized" readout when trying to use it. According to konigstiger's post at https://mbworld.org/forums/showpost....5&postcount=16 this situation is addressed by Service Disc W211 589 15 22 00. You can see photos of the disc, its jacket, and use instructions (such as they are) at https://mbworld.org/forums/classifieds/229715-sale-navigation-service-dvd-211-589-15-22-00-a.html#post2645155

As you may know, each new navigation map DVD contains a software update in addition to new map data. If you skip several map update discs, you may reach a point where your system will not recognize the newest map DVD as it attempts to update nav software. Service Disc W211 589 15 22 00 applies all of the "missing" pieces that would have been applied by each annual update, and allows the newest disc to be recognized. That Service Disc is used in the nav map disc reader, and it updates the same components that the sequential annual updates would.

If you update your map DVD each year, you should not have to apply Service Disc W211 589 15 22 00. I do not know how many discs you can successfully skip - it probably depends on the amount of software change year to year.

Situation 2 is the COMAND firmware update to provide ETA and cell phone signal strength while navigation is underway. As I read konigstiger's post, that is accomplished through Service Disc W211 589 14 22 00 - and it updates the COMAND head unit, not the nav system per se. My best guess is that it is used in the COMAND CD/DVD reader and not the nav disc reader, because this service disc is a CD, not a DVD, according to its verbal description.

Once you have updated the COMAND head unit, you should be able to follow the instructions at post 9 at https://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=212945.

Monkeyclaw gave the correct information for the proper Service Disc and the instructions for selecting ETA and cell signal strength in his response at https://mbworld.org/forums/audio-electronics/228568-re-comand-firmware.html

Starbrite mentions in the second linked post above that the COMAND unit update may remove access to the Engineering Menu (no big loss - little need for the owner to access it) and also removes the ability to make nav entries in motion. He goes on further to say that the dealer can re-implement the nav entries in motion feature (I often ask my passenger to make these entries while traveling, so it is useful).

With that, I believe we have our final answer. The fact that the two Service Discs carry a W211 designation, not W220, and differ in part number by only one digit didn't make this any easier to untangle.

Each Service Disc costs about $25. I do know that many dealers will apply the "situation 1" map update software free, if you have bought a new Nav DVD and get the "disc not recognized" readout. I don't know about the head unit update (situation 2) being done free.
