Thumbs up Terk Launches SIR-MINI Antenna

Terk Technologies today announced the launch of its SIR-MINI, the world’s smallest aftermarket vehicle antenna for SIRIUS Satellite Radio, the company says. Designed to be virtually invisible when installed, the SIR-MINI is the ideal high-performance antenna for SIRIUS radio reception as well as an upgrade from any larger, older SIRIUS antenna, according to TERK. The SIR-MINI (MSRP $49.95) is now shipping to retailers nationwide.

Pat Comunale, Vice President of Sales for TERK Technologies pointed out: “By delivering high-performance antenna reception from an ultra-slim, streamlined design, the
SIR-MINI gives SIRIUS Satellite Radio subscribers the opportunity to experience clear, high-quality programming without diminishing the aesthetics of their vehicle. The
SIR-MINI is the perfect antenna for any car, SUV or minivan.” Communale continued, “The SIR-MINI enables 12-volt dealers to supply SIRIUS Satellite Radio subscribers with the most advanced antenna solution on the market, and its introduction further demonstrates TERK’s commitment to developing leading-edge antenna products for a wide array of applications.”

The SIR MINI has a roof-mount design. Its magnetic base instantly installs without drilling into the vehicle, and it can be easily removed if the vehicle is sold or returned at the end of the lease. The 21-foot micro-coax cable is long enough for installation in SUVs and trucks, and can be routed around window molding and through access holes for a fully professional

So can it be trunk mounted above the designated pre-wired spot? Then a smaller doghouse, maybe even painted car color, could cover the antenna and make for a more attractive alternative than the antenna being used now?

The Mini doesn't connect to the OEM system without a complete set of adapters, one of which is difficult to get at this point (national backorder) and the other which is not produced anymore (it was included with older systems but now is not used anymore).

In case anyone wants to know the parts, one is the splitter from Terk ($20) and the other is an ACL.

Also, using all that stuff triples the number of antenna connectors in your system and thus reduces signal quality signficantly.

This has all been covered at MBWorld so do a search for more info.

p.s. the wiring of the Mini does not come through the bottom so if you mount in the OEM place on the trunk, the wire will run along the top of your decklid through the rubber seal and possibly cause leaks. It really should be on the roof instead, and for Panorama roof owners that would require adhesive mounting. Cars with a non-ferrous decklid (W211) would also require adhesive mounting.

According to Terk the Mercedes Sirius tuner already has an ALC built into it, so all you need is the Terk SIP splitter to make it work.

It seems to work better with an external ALC, so either the one in the Mercedes unit is not so hot... or it doesn't have one.

If it does have one, it has the wrong connectors (which don't mate correctly with the SIR-SP).
