2000 c230 kompressor
battery life

Hello everyone,

I own a 2000 C230 Kompressor with 40,000 miles on it. This morning I couldn't start the car, the battery seemed to run out of power and it doesn't look good to me. How long will a Mercedes' battery last? What possibly consumed it? Why is its life shorter than a non-luxury car? (I've never changed the battery of my 6-year old Mitsubishi). It just broke my dream about Mercedes Benz. Do I need to change the battery? Thank you all in advance.

Make sure you replace the battery with an OEM model. Since the battery is in the trunk (boot), there is a tube that exhausts the gas from the battery under the car. If this tube isn't connected, there is a risk of hydrogen buildup in the trunk and explosion. There was a service bulletin on this several years ago.

I still have my original battery. It's a 1994 C280.

I just replaced my battery of 7 years. Only died cause the alternator died. Car's running like a champ.

The theory about the tube. I think it's for the OEM batteries..no way in hell would a aftermarket battery pass inspection or production if it did that. I ended up with an Interstate battery

I would be very careful about using a battery without a vent to connect to the tube. Even batteries that are supposed to be "sealed" generate hydrogen while being charged. The hydrogen can collect in the trunk (boot) and be ignited by a spark from one of the relays that are close to the battery. There was a service bulletin and an article in the Star Magazine about several cars that exploded from this. Most batteries are designed and manufactured to be used in an open airflow area, not enclosed. I wouldn't try to save a little on the cost of a battery and risk losing the entire car - let alone the risk of life if someone were in the car.

The life of a battery is directly related to the following:
1. How many power accessories you have.
2. How the previous owner abused the battery.
3. How well YOU take care of the battery.
Your Mitsubishi probably did not have too many power accessories ( toys ).

My Interstate has the vent tube as long as many others :-)

Yes, I average about 7 years battery life on any vehicle I've ever owned.
Amazing what abuse ( boosting, running-down, not checking water, not keeping connections clean, etc. ) will do to a battery.

I never did anything to the batter, never boosted it nothing..not even check the water or connections clean and it lasted 7 years.

It died because my alternator crapped out on me.

Usually about 7 years, check with voltmeter what voltage you have with it not under load, if not at least 12.5 volts might be due for a new one. Check autozone, about 89 bucks with the exchange. W
