I just received a changer and can't determine how and where it's installed.
It looks like close to the battery since the fiber and power cables are there
but I can't find a spot to mount it. Maybe I need a kit or something. BTW:
It's going in a 2000 C280. Thx.

dont have a pic, but it should be mounted behind the rear wheel well of the passengers side. should be a little cubby hole to mount it.

I have the fiber and power connectors connected yet the head unit says
NO CD CHANGER. I hear other people saying the changer must be programmed
with the head unit (dealer visit??), I sure hope not. I see on autotoy.com they have instructions for their customers. Does anyone know how to program
the head unit for the CD changer? I've done this on other cars and it was
always plug and play. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

should be plug and play. doesnt it require an adaptor to interface with the OEM CD Changer pre-out?

I see on autotoy.com's site, there is reference to things you need to do in
order for it to work. Since I'm not a customer of theirs, the pictures and information is missing. I've searched the internet since last night and some
people think the head unit needs to be programmed to see the changer (visit
dealer). The odd thing is, the fiber isn't showing any light. I wonder if the
fiber is connected behind the head unit. How hard is it to pull the head unit
out?

The modern fiber optic cables are designed for infra-red light which won't be visible to the human eye. Never look at the end of a fiber because the infrared light can cause damage to your eyeball! (including blindness)

It doesn't take much power to go a few feet through fiber but it doesn't take much to blind you either! Even the laser in a CD player is enough to cause damage if someone looks at it closely. Typically there is a warning label attached to all optical devices that indicates their "Class" and the potential for damage.

I hear you. I was only pointing it at a surface away from me in the dark. I
did more research on getting the CD changer to work and all I come up with
is:

I need a D2B StarDiagnosis (DAS) Tool to make the Radio the Master and the
CD changer the Component 1. Now, I'm thinking I have to take it to the dealer for them to setup.

Thanks Doug!!! U still lovin the chip? I'm about to drop mine 1.2" before I chip
it, then save up for the 17" AMG wheels. I still need to find someone with a
Star Diagnostics Tool (DAS) before the changer will work. Of all the articles
I've read, they all say you need the tool to make the CD changer 'Component
One'. There's a company in Belgium that makes complete Diagnostics with the
D2B Star Diag interface built in. I'm just waiting to see how expensive it is. Maybe it's cheaper having the dealer set it. Or maybe disconnecting the battery for awhile then re-entering the radio code (might do it - like a learn mode).

We have different stereos. All I had to do was plug it in and it was ready to go. Good luck with it.

1) D2B and MOST fibre optic cables use visible light, you can see the red coming out of the fibre optic cable

2) infrared LASERS will damage your eyes, such as the type used for CD or other disc readers. The fibre optics in these vehicles use visible-light LED emitters (not collated LASER light). Short term exposure will not cause any long term damage, which is why there is no "CLASS" sticker on these devices (the class sticker is for lasers, not fibre optics)

As outlined in Mercedes workshop information, you can view the red light coming from one fibre optic cable to verify its connection to the device that is before it in the fibre loop.

1) Disconnect battery
2) Connect CD changer (all wires)
3) Reconnect battery
4) Enter radio code
5) CD worked!

I still can't find a position or place to mount (given the fiber and power
cables are short). It looks like it's meant to go next to the battery......

On the C43 it was mounted on the right side in the pouch thingy. On my C36 I mounted it in the left and covered it with the trunk mat. Really easy install, just plugs right in.
