Correct, 4300K is the somewhat standard. The bulbs, depending on whether they are a DS2 or DR2 and if in a projector assembly or regular housing will look different depending on the bulb/housing. If you want to upgrade, 6000K is the best/max for color and brighness, however anything over that has been proven to produce more glare than anything.

i have the 6000k philipps ultinons in my 330 and they're pretty sweet. bmw offers two different stock xenon bulbs. Osram 4100k and philipps 4300k. i was one of the unlucky ones to get the osrams and they sucked. i compared them to my infiniti I30t's (had it at the time) w/ PIAA halogens and the PIAA's actually looked better and offered better visibility. i don't know why but the philipps 4300k looked and performed noticeably better. had my car come equipped with those, i wouldn't have spent the money on the 6000k's. Personally i like the Osram Xenarc 5400k's. If they still make them, not sure. I believe philipps ultinon 6000k's actually burn at 5800k or 5600k. something like that. anything higher than that and your gonna really notice a loss in visibility, especially in wet weather.

with the 6000k's it's really not that much of a difference. i've been in car w/ 8000k's and it's ridiculous the difference over stock. you'll be ok w/ 4000k PIAA's. I think there's even a real xenon bulb in the mid 3k range that supposedly provides great visibility when used in your fogs.
