The guy who did it actually said its 12% but who knows, maybe its really a little lighter. At first i got 27% and hated it! had to pay 200 bucks to get it redone.

ANOTHER tint question!

I couldn't find this info doing a search. Exactly where is the piece of trim that has to be covered in "moleskin". Do you have to remove the door panel to get to it? Anyone have pics of the procedure? If you do remove the door panel, what do you do to keep from accidentally activating the air bag?

No one knows where this peice is? No one has a pic?

A second question: Has anyone tinted the top of the front windshield? CAN you tint it? I'm just concerned with trapping air bubbles around the thousands of little paint dots around the top of the windshield. If you have tinted it, can you post pics?

thanks!
Jim

Lots of talk about Moleskin. I tinted my 04.5 in April of last year...no Moleskin...and no scratches. It's overrated.

If you must do it, it's the rubberized molding that contacts the interior of the window at the top of the door panel.

Thanks! So, I guess the installers are putting the moleskin on without removing the panel then? What about tinting along the top of the windshield?

I had an idea, some one should try this...

Tonight, a friend of mine was asking about the auto dimming mirror. In explaining to him how it works I came up with a possible solution to this problem...

First off, we all know how the mirror works. There are two sensors, on facing aft and one facing foward. The mirror measures the difference between the two. If the light coming from behind is equal to the light coming from infront the mirror will not dim. But if the light from behind is brighter, it dims thinking there is something bright behind you. Having dark tint on the windows will make the light from behind not as dark compared to the light shinning through the front as it did without the tint.

Solution: Go to a stereo shop and ask for some scrap tint and tape it to the mirror on top of the front sensor (On the passanger side of the mirror for '05s) and see if that does anything...

Just a thought...

I had my car originally tinted with Madico Onyx 35% tint and after almost 2 years the film started turning violet. Just had my windows retinted using SunTek window films.

Most likely the effect would be dimming at daylight on a bright day.

Not ONLY on a bright day...but just dimmed on any day...
It does not measure the difference - it just sees that it is dark outside...

Hello? Hasn't anyone tinted the top of the windshield? And can someone else confirm that the piece of plastic that needs the moleskin is the top interior rubber piece that you can see along the top of the door panel?

Damn your persistent ..

1) I did not have the moleskin done when I had my tint installed. (did not know about it)...now my tint is now fairly scratched on both windows.

2) Had the top windshield tinted with the rest of the car 2 years ago. Still looks fine.

Thanks! So, you are confirming that the uppermost piece of rubber along the top of the interior door panel is the piece that needs "skinning"?

Yes, that's correct. You have to have "moleskin" on them or else it will scratch your tint, mine got scratch before I did that. I have Vecro tapes on them, the smooth side rather than "moleskin". You have to take the door panels out to do that. It is fairly easy.

Yes.,,the window inner rubber seal needs to be done..any reputable tint shop should be able to do it w/o trouble.

OK, but I've always wondered how the outside mirrors get the signal to dim and I've never found the sensor (if any). I have 35% tint in the rear window, and the interior rear view mirror dims less because of it. We can all see the sensor for that mirror. However, I think the outside mirrors dim as much as before tinting. Leading me to think there is a separate sensor for the outside mirrors. Could it be the one in the hood vents at the base of the windshield? What's the scoop on this, MBenzNL?

No, all dimming mirrors are controlled by the same circuit. The sensors are located in the overhead rear view mirror. Would have been very unwise (and un-German) to do it otherwise.
