Has anybody actually added a "custom" or aftermarket intake to the m271 yet? I wasn't even aware that anyone has attempted this at all.

I remember people replacing the cloth intake manifold that goes across the front of the engine bay with hard plastic. This way there was less air friction and also a less likely chance of the radiator heating up the air. The only worry was that water might get trapped inside so some people drilled holes in the bottom.

The other thing I remember people doing is on the top of the air box cover over the air filter are a bunch of grid peices. The peices were suspected to reduce air noise. Some people shaved these down in an attempt to reduce air friction.

There was some talk of splitting the intake into two separate ends.

All I have done is replace the stock air filter.....more for peice of mind than anything.

As far as I remember, nobody posted pictures of replacing the cloth air hose (on the M271) actually did this. Most of the talk was "potential" projects, but I don't remember anybody posting pics, actually doing it and/or proving any gain/loss from doing it.

I am one of the few that actually indicated that they took off the baffles from the cover, but according to what was said, these are more "sound" baffles than restrictive to "air flow". I noticed a slight change in sound, but very slight. Others commented even further to say that the baffles may be there to keep the cover from collapsing and some others had other theories as well.

Now, for aftermarket intakes, I don't think anybody has done it yet because the stock intake is actually set up quite well. Whether or not there is an advantageous way to increase cool air flow without losing power remains to be seen.

Yo drex, I like your style man. You're very well knowledged, why aren't you a moderator? BTW, I'm getting my car back from the dealer after 3 weeks due to hurricane wilma and my K&N has been sitting in the box collecting dust and cat hair. I've been anxious to install it but should I post pics of the installation? I think this should be everyone's cheapest and first mod especially for the noobsters. It doesn't hurt to post the process.

Thanks. I enjoy posting on the boards and sharing the knowledge I've learned (as a hobby) over the years. That being said, 3 reasons I'm not a moderator 1) I haven't been asked, 2) No time to really devote to it, 3) I wouldn't really consider myself an expert, just an heavy enthusiast.

So, with that being said, I just try to help out however I can, whenever I can. Oh, as for the pics on the DIY's for install of anything, that's always a good thing as long as you have the time to do it. I'm still waiting on my new digital camera and memory card, but once I have it, I plan on doing some DIY's or refreshing on DIY's that have already been posted on the board.

Hell yeah post pics! There are DIY's for the 320 and the C55, but none for the m271, that would be a great help.

and Drex, damn, the T7 still isn't in?

Nope. Kinda getting worried a little, but I've been in constant contact with the seller, so he assured me that no matter what, I'll either have the camera in my hands soon or a complete refund. Either way, I'm just using my Mom's camera to kinda learn Sony's lil' pictographs and what each of them means...Basically giving me time to learn the functions before mine gets in.

So nothing on intakes yet i presume. This is tough!

I'm so used to having unlimited amount of modification resources with my previous cars, to this extremely mod limited car. AKh!

I know that K&N makes a drop in filter, but i've heard MAF issues with that. Something to do with excess oil so on and so forth. Can anybody confirm this?

Not really. At least, I don't feel any difference. If anything, I can feel better response, but not that much of a difference at all.

None at all. You could hear it much better when we had the cover off, but once the cover was back on, there wasn't any difference in sound. If anything, when I took out those sound baffles or waffle things (whatever they actually are), that was what made a slight difference in sound.

Other than that, I didn't really hear any difference and I drive with the windows open all the time (just to hear for any sound differences.

I modified a short ram for my 02 m111 its real easy to do. There is a sound change especially the winding of the sc. There is also a noticeable power change.... Sorry no dyno yet but here's a pic...

Thanks.... If theres anyone interested n doing a short ram intake post pics of the engine bays and i can tell u how to route a pipe..... U have a choice between ABS plastic, or u can go aluminum. Its just a matter of measuring and getting the right bends.

what kind of reasonable gains can be expected from just an airfilter upgrade?

Which intake kit did you use and how heavily would it have to be modified for the M271...while searching the forums there was also something about opening up the second air scoop thats behind the grill since the M271 only uses one of them, has anyone actually made any headway in using that second scoop, if not, I think I want to try it, anyone have any advice on how connect the thing? would the weapon-R silicone tubes be of any use?

Is there anyone in the NY/LI area that would be willing to help me out with this as a weekend project?

The stock M271 intake is vastly superior (for very obvious reasons) to the design pictured. All we need to do is replace the paper conical filter with a K&N. Additional gains could be had by replacing the cloth pipe w/ 3" ABS and de-baffling. I wish someone had time to dyno this stuff though! For the first time in my life time is always short on hand, otherwise this would all be done by now.

Hey, I 'd like to try it too. I need to find out what size tube we need for our replacement and which intake kit we can use to custom fit out M271 engine.

I think most of the intake kits will work as long as its straight so that we can cut it and stick it on. I'll have to start looking at ebay and see which kit is least expensive for this experiment. I'd also like to see maybe how to take the SuperCharger resonator off to make the engine really roar!

The design in that picture is a custom job on the m111 engine. On the stock m111 there air intake isn't even conical. It's just a box with filters in there. I'd guess that the short ram that Usmc2k did would provide small gains on the m111 engine.
The M271 engine runs at a much higher boost and already has a pretty efficient air intake. I'm nearly positive that no one will get more than 5hp from the custom intake.
