aftermarket cd changer

hey guys I just got an 05 c230ss without a CD changer, what cd changer will work on the car. I don't want any extra module, i want to control the changer through the factory radio and steering wheel. oh how can i check if the radio is ready for a fiber optic oem changer.

thanks guys.

you can surf around forum and pick one up or go through crutchfield....... You could just think of yourself as lucky and replace the HU from the getgo. I wish my car didn't come with the changer... i would have saved mucho dinero!

I swapped out my radio, so I have one sitting in my car if you would like to purchase it. Full, factory new, but I just left it in there since I changed the HU about six months in. PM me if you would like to purchase it.

The only real concern is getting the CD changer activated, which you can do at your local dealer. However, most of the time dealers are not very nice, and will charge you the full installation charge just to hook up the computer. If you have a friend there or a nice SA, they'll probably do it for you for a six pack or something.

Due to the fact that the mercedes HU runs on fiber optic cables, there are VERY few cd changers that can directly connect to it other than the OEM one. I think Nokamichi one can also connect to it. Otherwise you need replace the head unit, and i think you'll also have to rewire the speakers to the new one. I'm not a 100% sure about this, other member will prob give you more detail than i did. I remember i wanted to do the samething but in the end it proved to difficult and expensive just for a CD changer. I would recommend an Ipod integration kit instead if you do own one.

hey thanks guys for your replies. obviously it's not as simple as i thought. i was hoping for a plug-n-play operation. i'll probably hold off for now, it's a convenience issue for now. thanks again.

Well, technically, it is plug-and-play. You just plug it into your head unit. However, it's a crapshoot regarding the activation: some people had it already, some people didn't. And like I said, if you know a nice SA, he'll do it for you on the next service for free if you need it.

It's only plug and play if you get the OEM cd changer. I was not able to find any CD changers that would connect to the MB HU. The OEM cd changer is a 500 dollar rip off. Crutchfield sells it but it's not worth the money.

Right. That's because I have the OEM cd changer. That's why I say it's plug and play!

ok so an oem is a plug-then-go-to-the-dealer-then play. still much better than ripping the whole system off. i'll pm you when i decide to get it. thanks again.
