Quote: How does tis flat hood badge differ from what can be bought at formymercedes.com?
You might want to read this thread from the beginning...

The formymercedes badge is the same cheap plastic SLK badge that you can buy at the dealership for $20 in kit form. It covers the recess in the hood, and once the clear coat is rubbed off with car washes, the blue in the laurel wreath fades in the sun to nothing. Return to dealer for another badge.

This badge is slightly smaller in diameter so fits within the recess in the hood. A much cleaner, more flush mounted look to it. It's made from an OEM upright star mount, so attaches just like the OEM star. The center star is made of metal, and the whole thing will hold up better than the cheap SLK Badge. You'll part with the car long before the blue in the OEM wreath fades on this unit. Plus, DFWDude is going to hand make these in limited quantity, signed and numbered, etc.

MB missed the boat on this one, IMO. They should have made the flat badge along the lines of the way this guy is pursuing it.

Forgot to ask................What are the possibilities of having a few made in Black instead of the standard blue????????? That way, it would go with the other blacked out trim that I have. Pretty please!!!!!

You can see from the pictures that the only area that is not stock is the White Star part that replaces the upright post in the center. So, I believe it otherwise uses the factory blue wreath surround, unchanged as it comes from the factory. So, black is not an option, I think.

Exactly correct. Look at the standard upright star, and you'll see the raised area inside the blue laurel wreath that houses the gimble mount for the upright star. All that is milled away, leaving a cavity where the White Star insert now sits. The rest of the factory assembly is untouched.

I suppose it's very fortunate that the White Star insert is of a size that fits the space so precisely. Like the parts were made to go together.

This looks fantastic, hadn't realised from the initial picture it would be this good. Can't wait to see how the re-manufactured Chinese made inserts will look.

Keep us posted...

Coincidentally, I received approval samples from China on Thursday. They look GREAT (better than the original, actually)!

Thought you might like a peak...

So, I have already placed an order via e-mail to China for a production batch of these inserts. I hope to have them within a couple weeks.

In the meantime, these five pre-production samples look so good, I will be contacting those of you at the head of the list to see if you are still interested. I will then start making up some completed assemblies.

Some of you have asked about pricing. If I understand the rules correctly, I can't "advertise" here because I am not a forum sponsor. Fair enough. However, because of the extremely limited nature of this hobby project, I have acquired permission from the MBWorld Staff Gurus to refer interested folks to my e-mail, noted below for any details.

White Star Flat Badge #N004
Rob,

Thank you for taking your valuable time to take on this project! I received my flat white star today and it is unbelievable! The quality and craftsmanship is unreal, it is perfect! Not to mention I sent payment over the weekend and Rob had it to my house by wednesday!

Some pictures and the authenticity card below, sorry my car is not by any means clean right now (110+ for 10 strait days I stay inside).

Looks nice, better than I thought it would...although I still love the pimp factor of the upright star. It's nice to glance at sometimes.

Good effort on these though, they really look pro!

Wow...that's amazing! I wish this worked on the coupe. Any chance of making just the top part separate from the mount so I can try and attach it to the coupe hood? This is all assuming, of course, that the coupe has a recessed area the same size as the sedan under the hood badge.

UPDATE! The factory wrote me on Friday evening. The production run of WHITE STAR inserts have been shipped. I hope to receive them by next Friday, so I can make some new WHITE STAR Flat Badges the weekend of Aug. 5-6. I bought 10 new OEM star assemblies on Saturday that are now awaiting conversion.

Under the coupe badge there is a divot as on the Sedan. Unfortunately, it is a shallower divot than on the sedan. Worse, there is no through hole in the hood... just two small holes that hold the grommets that retain the flat badge in place. So this badge will not work at all on the coupe.
