Brake Rotors and Pads

Just curious. How often do you change your rotors and brake pads? I am required to change my brake pads roughly every 20-21,000 miles. So far I have not changed my rotors yet (car is at 52,000 miles), but am considering it once I need new brake pads. Mercedes is charging nearly $700 for new rotors, brake pads, and brake fliud (including tax and labor).

I'm considering the AMG 4 piston. Since TWS is charging $1,000 for C32 AMG brake with rotors, pads, and brake fluid (including tax and labor).

I know Drex replaces his rotors every other brake pads service. So I wanted more comparisions. Thanks for the information.

My front Porterfield pads lasted 75K miles and could have gone another 10 or 15K. Usually I replace rotors every other time pads are replaced but with that kind of mileage I'll replace them every time. As far as cost goes....use an independent and it will be at least 1/2 as much ($100 for rotors, $120 for good pads, $130 for labor).

WOW! 75k miles in So. Cal. is amazing. Since you're in HB, do you have any place that you'd recommend?

Johnny,

I'm glad I'm not the first one that'll have to change pads and rotors on the 05 and up brakes.

$1k for the AMG 4-pot isn't so bad, especially if the dealer is charging $700.

but, assuming that I'd keep my stock setup, has anyone found pads and rotors better than oem for the 05 and up 2-pot? Porterfield STILL doesn't have 2005 and up specific pads.

I do my own work so I can't recommend. However....and don't laugh....if you have a Pep Boys with good mechanics the job is definitely within their skill range. If they have treated rotors and ceramic pads for your model I would use them. I'm very pleased with their treated rotors and ceramic pads I've installed on other cars (when I installed mine they didn't have them for the C). Pads and rotors are not rocket scientist stuff and just about any car mechanic can change them. If you don't want them to squeal or shimmy be careful how you break them in.

haha cool, thanks!

I just checked with Porterfield and got an almost instantaneous response regarding the pads:

(WENDY FROM PORTERFIELD) Yes but without wear sensor cut outs. It won't be until next year that we can furnish our material with factory steel. The price currently is $249.00

Yea, my first set of pads from Porterfield didn't have the cutouts/sensor mounts or the sensor holes. I just tied the sensors back and kept an eye on the pad wear. $249!!!!! That's the most I've ever heard for street pads but still cheaper than going stock if you get the same wear I did...but that's mostly driving style and environment.

I found the DIY for brakes on the more "coupe-oriented" forums and applied the same technique to my car. With a little help from friends it wasnt too bad.

You guys should give it a shot. I replaced my rear rotors when i changed my rear pads, but I didnt really need to and im at 60k+ miles. Just wanted to get hands on exp trying it out. Ive gotta get porterfields for my front pads because after changing my rear pads, my rear tires get nearly no brake dust! its sooo worth it just for the amount of time ya save on cleaning brake dust. Brake dust bad for you!

If you guys are going to replace the rotor yourself, I've gotta warn you about that darn screw they use to hold the rotor down. I swear that material is SUPER soft and your screw driver will eat it up like nothing. So be careful or have easy outs on hand Better yet, talk to the stealership to get new screws before ya do the project.

does anyone know where I can get cross-drilleds from the 05 and up?

Where do you buy your pads? Does $120 cover all four front pads?

My brakes are starting to squeal a little and I even hear an occassional "grind" sound... not good. I checked my rotors and there isn't any signs of scaring, but my brake wear sensor isn't telling me it's time for brakes.

$120 does cover all 4 front pads, but I bought mine from formymercedes.com and they include an install/silencer kit ($20, worth it) with the pads. Rears are $90. Be careful about the wear sensors. Depending on your year and model determines how many wheels have the sensor. My car has them on both fronts and the right rear....however....they are not on all pads, just the inside pad, and wouldn't you know it that when I checked the one wheel that didn't have a sensor the pad had only .020" remaining on the inside pad!

If you guys read one of my previous posts, I started the beta testing of Porter Pads for my car when they created the first mold for my car. I paid less because it was a project. I had to create my own holes using a Dremel and comparing it to the OEM ones. I actually got the sensor to fit properly. I can't wait till they have them made perfectly next year.

I had them for about close to 500 miles and the rears don't do that much dust. The front dust is more but much much less than OEM. I don't have to wash the wheels as much.

For street use, slotted rotors are OK, but you really don't want drilled rotors. The holes are useful for cooling in competition, but you don't care about how long they last. In street cars cracks develope in the disc, radiating from the holes. Mercedes feels 1 inch long cracks are OK, but if I am in the car...well, this is no place to be "on the cheap."

just buy the parts yourself and take it to independent shop for installation, that will save you a lot money.
I would only change rotors if it's needed.
I don't know if C class requires you to change rotors everytime when changing brakes.
But for BMW 3 series, they recommand you to change rotors everytime when chaning brakes, but I didn't do that..haha

It's ironic how this post came along. Literally 4 days ago, my Brake Lights went on. I didn't have time to buy anything or look around b/c I was faaar from home and needed to drive 300 miles or so. Plus, my daily commute is in bumper to bumper traffic. I took it to the closest dealer by my office and haggled with them a bit. I got the front rotors and pads changed for $440, and my service A for $190 all with tax. Eh, it's a convenience thing I guess.

I'm probably going to order the zimmerman rotors and then have them changed with the rear pads by an independent shop in a couple months though.

25k miles between front pads. 50k miles for the front rotors (I forced about 5k mile extra on them basically you had to stand on it to stop). 50k miles for the rear pads.
