'05 c230 SS with 24k. My car has visited the dealership about 10 times for various electrical problems.

- Hood is open warning... and alarm would always go off.
- Xenon headlamps have both already been replaced twice (not just the bulb... the entire housing).

I am not looking forward to these problems out of warranty.

Considering a '07 BMW x3 (more expensive I know).

same dilema for me as well. what u can do:
1) pray
2) change car

consider the mechanic crappyness, i wouldn't give trust to mercedes parts anymore. If they light up, find ur local auto shop that do mercedes, have them reset the light to see if they going to turn off or not. Thus that's what the dealerships are doing anyways, but not gonna charge you a fortune. Try do as much repair out of dealership as possible, that should save you tons of dollars. As for ur headlight, if they burn again, go for aftermarket ballast/bulb, they are cheaper, more reliable (warranty), and probably better IMO.

Mercedes part if u ask me, they are crap. got enough of "crap" from dealership. If i didn't mod my car i'd definiately think the 2nd option

Dude, Euro car has one down side, that it's not reliable.

Afterall it's talking about Luck, you get ur car and if it's problem free, you should be glad (though my previous car VW Golf 1.8t was problem free, i should've kept it, nice car). That's why Euro car can't hold up good value in used car market, whereas Japanese car can still sell for good price.

For example Toyota Tercel, yes it's low value car, but my friend's uncle drove it for 15 years, problem free. I've heard tons of horror stories about fixing euro cars and cost them fortune, engine problems, light on, problem here and there, sooner or later u'll want to sell ur car to get rid of "problem". Not saying i dislike euro car, but this is an issue that they seriously have to resolve. If you are telling me Mercedes/BMW/VW are doing this because they have technology and whereas Japanese car doesn't, I agree 50%. But if you look at Z350, Lexus IS250/350, look at their reliability and technology, it's there, but problem free.

I'm amazed at how many people get rid of their Benz's after 50k miles because the warranty is up............

Is the car that bad after 50k????

Why is the warranty up so soon?
Stock warranty is 4 years or 50K miles....

If for some reason it is up, consider an aftermarket warranty.
Likely there are bugs yet to be worked out...

Think of the warranty as the expiraton date on a carton of milk, do you really want to see if it goes bad personally? The taste it leaves in your mouth will haunt you for years. Get the new 2008.....

Not just Benz owners, a lot of German car owners will trade in for something else once the warranty goes. If you're/they're not mechanically inclined to do some repairs yourself, visits to the dealer or mechanic can get expensive. Average visit out of warranty is like around $250-$500 depending on the problem. Figure an hour labor at most dealers are over $100/hour now, so diagnostic for minimum an hour then parts + labor to repair the issue. Not cheap

That seems really pathetic in a way; what you're telling me is that essentially, "most" German cars are good up to 50K, or approximately 5 years (if you're good with keeping the miles low.) So in comparison, Japanese cartons of milk have twice if not triple the shelf life, versus our quick-to-spoil milk?

Everyone should take cues on how to build high quality, reliable cars from Porsche.

But then again, if they did, Porsche wouldn't be peerless, and untouchable as they are today....

My '03 C230 had 78k when I traded it. My '05 C230 has 38k currently. Neither car has been problematic. I guess it's luck of the draw.

I'm just saying what I've read of German owners, not myself. My parents run their cars into the ground. '99 ML with 95k miles and a '01 S500 with 70k on it. Well over the warranty period. I have an '05 A4 with 58k miles on it. I plan to keep it till it dies or I want to change cars.

Doesn't reflect all German car owners, just some of them will go this route.

didn't u read the other post on how mercedes deal with the car with extended warranty? just reset the light and see if problem arise, if not then they'll just return ur car to u, and not fixing crap. If they do fix, they will charge u tons of dough for it. i donno man, i gotta face that problem as well in couple months, mercedes is just getting on my nerve when it comes to mechanic repairment

I agree; there's a huge difference between an owner that properly takes care of their car vs an owner that just trashes it around, with the attitude "it's just a car, I'll just get another one". I don't think any car on Earth can hold up well with a neglectful owner, no matter how high quality and reliable it is.
