Thumbs up Sunroof maintenance

I was having a little issues with my sunroof so I did a little checking and found out its a good idea to lube it regularly. My problem was when I would hit the express close function it would get about 1/3 closed and go back to open. I thought I had a big problem. Then when i had it in my shop under the lights and watching it I could see what ti was doing. It would start binding while trying to move. I cleaned the tracks of dirt and muck, and lubed them with a silcone spray I like to use. Works like a champ. I didn't have as much of an issue with my W124, but I believe this car is a little more sensitive. I usually lube my latches and door seals with this same lube because it works well with plastics and rubber. I do this on every detail cleaning, about four or five times a year when I do the extensive vacume and clean all the door jambs, that kind of stuff. I thought i would share incase anyone else is expierencing any problems.

Thank you very much Russell Stevens, you have solved my hair-ripping problem for the past 2 months. haha. I thought it'd be some "defected senor" or something the stealership would charge me 2g's to change or something.
Just wondering, what kind of silicone spray do you use? I only have WD-40...but I heard that doesn't work out too well for these situations (door jams, tracks, etc).

Gunk makes a silcone spray for like $3.50-$4.00 for big can. Should be able to get it at the parts store. I use this on all the seals and latches. Same thing, I thought oh crap here comes the issues. But it went away with one shot to each side. Just hit the silver rail on each side, I made sure to hit inside the grove to.

I also had the same problem but the dealer changed the entire sunroof control panel. They said they could not just change the switch. I also looked to see if it was binding but I noticed none. I am just saying this because not eveyone that stated thery had the same problem may be having binding issues. I have also heard the switches on those sunroof control modules are pretty problematic.

Cleaned/Re-lubricated my sunroof just five minutes ago. Bought some Pyroil (forgot how to spell it) Silicone Lubricant from KRagen's for about 5 bucks...Got a slightly damp terry cloth and wiped down the tracks and stuck the edges of the towel into the tiny cracks of tracks...then started re-lubing the tracks and all...just make sure when you do this...an area with a lot of ventilation and some time for the stuff to dry...there's a huge chemical scent in my car right now...windows are down sitting in my garage with the garage door ajar.

Clear Dry Lube is pretty good for stuff like this. Nothing will stick to it and/or create any gunk or mess. I had a problem with mine one time and it needed to be adjusted. I took it to the Dealer and they adjusted it for free (or under warranty...who knows...didn't cost me a cent). Has been working perfectly ever since!!!

Hope this helps!

Russell, great solution for sunroof maintenance. I may add this to the AFTERMARKET MODS / SIY stickies. I do the same as you, although I don't lube up the track rails that often. Just clean/wipe down the rails (and re-sync sunroof).

ok i figured out the exact spots to put the oil/lubricant. I did as Russel Stevens said and cleaned the rail and oiled it. but there are exact crucial spots. on the c230 06. when you are looking at the rail down. there is a rectangular notch where teh sunroof goes back. be sure to put lubricant inside the rectangle (both sides). Also, the sunroof was kicking back near the front where it closes. on both sides there is a contact that pushes down the wind deflector thing near the front. make sure to put lubricant here as well and life will be good. i may take a picture and do some diagramming if anyone needs it.

Sanny, if you do that, make sure to post the pics up here. That way, it'll be more valuable as a sticky.

i wish there was a way to turn down the sensitivity of the sensor that detects resistance because that is what causing us the problems with the sunroof.

i agree. and this is the true source of our problems. if you were drivinng the wind resistance would push it back. there has to be some way of adjusting the sensor, or dampening it.

there are a few variables that can be adjusted with Star Diagnose regarding the sunroof. Same goes with windows. I remember setting up pinch guard on a w220 and even though nothing was there, it would still roll window back. I had to later disable this feature.

Mine is super sensative like that. Hmmmm...maybe I'll have that done.

Has Steve done this before, Sunman?
