noisy belt fix

i was driving today and noticed that a belt under the hood somehwhere was making some noise. i took a can of WD40 that i found in my garage and sprayed it on all the belts and anywhere the belt will go. the noise was fixed and the engine seem to be a lot more quieter. i was careful b/c i didnt want to spray it in the alternator. the WD40 gave the belts a light shine also which will prevent the belts from cracking. anyone here also spray WD40 on there belts and pulley???

I did the exact same thing a couple of weeks back and the noise went away for a short period of time. Needless to say the noise came back. I brought it into the dealership and the idler pulley had to be replaced (under warranty).

Hopefully the sound was purely the belt but watch out for an issue with your pulley's.

Is it a whinning noise? It could be the idler pulley like jmza2 said. I had the same issue before.

Never, never, spray/put/wipe/drip oil on rubber belts. WD40 might be harmless in light application as it disipates quickly and may even act as a cleaner with all its' solvents but I wouldn't take the chance. What was the noise...squeeling?

why not try some sprays that is actually labeled as belt dressings... i kinda agree with spraying some... specially here in tx... heat... driness... weather seems to beat down on many other rubber materials... im guessing it would do the same for the rubber made belts under the hood.
