Trimming rear bumper! Advice wanted

I plan on fabing up a custom dual exhaust so I need to trim my passenger side bumper to match the driver side.
Anyone done this?
How thick is the bumper, what is a good tool to use?
If this is going to be difficult I will let a local body shop do it but I hate to waste money if it’s something I can handle. Thanks for any and all advice!

JC

No offense but is this from experience?. I was concerned a dremel may chip the paint. What is the best way to avoid that or is it not likely?

I DIYed it with a dremel. No problem. You just need a steady hand.

I'd outline what you want to remove with a couple layers of masking tape. That way you can get the shape you want and will have some protection for the bumper/paint

Dremel, baby. And yes, I've done this with experience on 4-5 different cars (including mine pre-Brabus)...do the masking thing, it helps.

Sounds like a plan, should I just use the thinnest bit I can find?
Any ingenious ideas of a good way to get the shape from the other side?
I really don’t know how I would get anything done without forum support!

Well, I took the fiber reinforced disk to make a general outline and cutaway as much as possible - after that it's just the grinding and sanding to shape. Going slow doesn't hurt..unless it's too slow, but you'll be able to tell. DRAW IT UP with masking tape and cut along the lines.

What he said...

My advice: Measure twice, cut once.

I've also done this to about 3 or 4 cars, not my own, but customers at the garage who wanted custom exhausts, I mark out the outline with a white marker pen, tape around it with rubber insulation tape, grind out the shape, peel away the tape, wash off any remaining white marker pen, then sand it down with very fine sand paper untill it smoothens out. Job done, customers always been totally satisfied.

I finally got my tips in and made templates for the hole area. Now I need to decide what type of cutting tool to use. I hear mention of the disc but I had planned on using a very small diameter what looks like a drill bit. I have a small router base for my dremel so I thought this might work best. So dremel drill bit tool or cutting disc? Any opinions?
