C230K Tweeter problem

Hello everyone...have been browsing this site for a few months now...just registered...i've had my c230 for nearly 6 months now...have the BOSE system...and the tweeters seem to be going bad...w/ certain songs(rock mainly) it sounds like they are blown...not fully though...just some static...i dont think i've blown the system, as its just not that loud...has anyone else noticed this?...thanks...q

I noticed some marked distortion in the mids just before I got an SOS/TeleAid error. I took it in, they reseated some loose connectors and updated teleaid software and all is good...I think the loose connectors were the real problem, that seemed to correct the sound, display brightness and teleaid issues.

It's pretty hard to blow a tweeter, I think. The cone (or dome) is very small and stiff, and the excursion is very small also. Compared to a woofer or midrange, the amount of power going through the tweeter is much less, no? I think you'd burn out a tweeter voice coil before you blew the cone.

blown speaker

In most sound systems it is actually more likely to damage a tweeter than a woofer. Such damage is caused by over driving the power amp which results in amplifier clipping. Clipping sends an electrical signal to the tweeter which contains more power than a tweeter is designed to handle. A signal like this will build up excessive heat in the tweeter voice coil cuasing it to melt, hence a "blown" tweeter.

The Bose car audio systems contain a level sensitve compression circuit which prevents the power amp from clipping. this serves two purposes: 1) minimizes audible distortion in high volume listening 2) acts as an active speaker protection device, making it very difficult to blow a speaker.

Just an FYI!

I should have also mentioned

Intermitent distortion audible through a speaker is rarely caused by the speaker itself. The problem described earlier in the thread is most likely caused by something other than a damaged speaker component.

Mike,
Thats what i was suspecting. Cause w/ certain CDs , mainly low-fi ones, the tweeters sound fine...only certain CDs, i.e. certain frequencies (usually from the hi-fi cds) produce some distortion. I was thinking in could be an amp or a crossfader problem. Do you know if the Bose system uses a fader? Perhaps certain frequencies are mistakenly crossed to the tweeter or something of that sort.

Gas,
A fader, as it relates to a car stereo system, controls the relative volume between the front and rear speakers. A crossover network is an electronic circuit which would be part of a speaker system where there are multiple drivers (speakers) within that speaker system, each dedicated to reproducing certain frequency ranges (such as a woofer and tweeter). An electronic component within a crossover network could develop an intermittent problem which, when the problem is present, could produce audible distortion from a tweeter. Hopefully, when you take it in to be checked the problem will be easily identifiable.

+1 - wimpy amps with crap power supplies that clip & generate square waves which the X over sends to the tweeter is what blows them.

Bose use a soft clip circuit which helps.
