....like 130 degrees Farenheit off, currently reading 185 F! I did a little searching before posting, saw a thread where someone had this issue after a car wash. The advice to him:

Others in that thread said it was a dealer reset, but wouldn't you think (even a dope like) I could do it?

Yep, your temp sensor is no longer plugged into the socket. No biggie really. You car reads the air temp of the intake at your MAF.

The part is about $19.

Do you mean Outside Air Temperature or Engine Coolant Temperature?

thanks for the reply....so, is a part necessary, or is it just unplugged, and I can plug it back in? and, might this be related to the body work? It was a dented passenger side fender with some scratches on the side of the bumper. I wouldn't be surprised if the bumper had to be removed. I looked at the bumper below the foglight (I'd have taken a pic but it's pouring here) and there are three holes in that little grille. lars's description of a "little black nipple" fits the hole on the right; the middle hole has more of a pin protruding, and the leftmost hole is empty. Is THAT where the sensor should be, or is the sensor in that right hole, and disconnected up closer to my MAF?

BTW capt...yes, outside temp; currently about 55 here, reading 185.

please share part number. My coupe is the affected car; there are 3 holes in that foglight grille: which one should house the temp sensor nipple?

Doesn't matter which one really. Just find where it fits. Yes, it sounds like during the body work they may have unplugged it or something.

sooooooo are you telling me that if I unplug the air temp sensor I can convert my digital readout to a intake air temperature display?

If this is the case, I will be doing that.
I don't care how hot it is outside, thats what the air conditioner is for. I DO care how hot my intake air temp is though.

The ambient air temp sensor will not read the intake temp at the MAF. You can however get this info by having an OBD II computer plugged into your OBD port. There you can get the intake temp, spark advance, engine load, etc. Lots of cool stuff to look at.

Oh. The way you wrote your reply made it sound as though the display defaulted to the intake air temperature in the event that the signal from the OAT is lost.

You're completely correct about me needing to hook up an OBD-II device though, I want to do that very badly!

What happened in my case was the temperature sensor was broken, and it was reading 85 C, just replaced it with one of a scrap-jard for a very cheap amount, pushed it back in and worked like a charm. So probably yours in broken or just missing. If you remove the front mudflap on the passanger-side (the lowest one that is connected to your fender) you can see the place where you mount it. You just push it in that's it. For cabling it's the thin green wire and brown wire. The thicker green wire is the one for the foglight.
