Passenger mirror tilt

I have an intermittant issue with my passenger mirror - I have my settings configured so that the pass. mirror tilts down when I put the car in reverse. However, it only does this about 50% of the time - the rest of the time it stays stationary. Additionally, the other day I looked over at it as I was driving down the road, and it was still in the "down" position! I pressed the driver's seat memory button and it corrected itself, but this still means there's an issue somewhere...

Is the mirror operation switch controlled (and thus, a bad switch somewhere), or is this an ecu logic issue?

Thanks -

The driver-passenger side selector buttons has to be set to the passenger side in order for tilt-down to occure.

Even still, I find my mirrors sometimes drift from the set location. It's done this since new.

No, it's an option. I believe it was part of the convenience package.

If you have memory seats, you have the auto tilting mirror.

There is a way to enable the feature with the Star computer on a car without memory seats, but I think you need special software that even the dealers don't have.... not sure....

Tis true that the right mirror tilt feature is only furnished from the factory on cars with memory seats.

It can be added to some 2005+ cars if you change the mirror base and the door module. You also need "developer" software to program the front SAM to move the mirror when shifted into reverse.

Prior to 2005, you would also need to change the front SAM.

The mirror moves as directed by the right door module. The module is different for cars with memory seats. The mirror base is also different for cars with memory seats. The mirror base on memory seat cars have a position sensor and extra wiring to tell the door module the angle of the mirror.

The problem cannot be a defective switch, because the switch simply tells (via the CANbus) a microcontroller in the door module what you desire.

The door module has the drive electronics to actually move the mirror when commanded by the microcontroller. The microconroller also monitors the position sensor and stops the mirror when at the designated place. Usual faults are defective position sensors, open wires between the mirror base and door module, corroded connections on the door module, or a bad door module. Random ocassional failures can be due to communications glitches on the CANbus, or trouble with the transmission reverse switch getting it's message on the CANbus.

That officially makes it a "feature" and not a 'failure' since it's so common. Since new my passenger mirror won't return to memory selection until after I hit the memory button again after backing out and while driving forward.

mirror remaining down

Ok... there is a simple fix for this. Adjust the mirror to the extreme in and down position. Spray into the space a good dose of WD40. Move the mirror all around and then repeat the WD40 treatment in the extreme out and up position. Again move the mirror all around and your problem should go away. I've had this same issue on my E430 and WD40 worked well for me.

Should work fine with a manual transmission. It only works with the passenger side mirror.

1. Turn on the ignition
2. Push the button to select the right hand mirror.
3. Position mirror so you can see the rear wheel and curb.
4. Press the memory button on the dirvers door. (above 3 position switch)
5. Within 3 seconds, press the down arrow button for the mirror adjustment.

Read step four carefully. I was pushing the wrong darn button for two days. The position is now stored IF the mirror did not move. If the mirror moves, repeat the steps. After the mirror position is stored, you can move it again.

To use the feature:

Be sure the Mirror Set. Parking aid function in the Convenience submenu of the control system is set to "ON."

Turn on the ignition.

Press the button to select the right mirror.

Put the gear lever in "Reverse."

The mirror will now assume the position memorized.

The mirror will resume to the normal position 10 seconds after you move the gearshift out of reverse, instantly if you drive faster than 6 mph, or push the button to select the driver's side mirror.

m-

thanks so much for the DIY steps and procedures.

i've tried, but to no avail.

it seems that under my "convience" settings i have only one sub-menu (access/exit feature for the steering wheel)

even the owners manul lists that as the only sub-menu feature of the convience menu (pg.133 i believe)

seems like BS that they've removed this feature altogether on the 07's...

i think......
