Tow Hitch

Why is it that I cannot find an oem tow hitch for my c240 here in the States. The person at the dealer parts desk thought i was crazy, he did not seem to think that the car could tow anything. By the way, all I am planning to tow is a small trailer to transport my 400lb ducati to the race track, so even with the trailer, i will should still be under 1000lbs.
So if there is anyone here in the States that knows where to get an oem tow hitch please let me know.

do a search for tow-hitch for the C-Coupe.
The application is for European cars only, but if you manage to get the Coupe tow-hitch
it may be adapted to a C-Class Sedan.

US dealerships do not sell OEM tow hitches for the C-Class.

I've seen some on eBay direct from Germany, so you might want to look there.

one other thing, the tow-ball itself on the OEM tow-hitch is different in Europe than what you would see on tow-hitches in the US.
So some modification will need to be done regardless.

It might be easier, cheaper, and safer to just get an aftermarket tow-hitch fitted to your C240 based on the car's specifications (power rating, towing capacity, transmission drive-train) from a US vendor.

curt hitches

After a bit more research it seem like the Curt hitch is the most discreet, it also allows you to swap different ball sizes.
The european hitch is one size only and metric, and alot more expensive.
I think that I am going to keep it local.

Thanks for the replies.

2019 C300 Wagon; '75 Triumph TR6; previous: 2004 C230 6spd sold after 17 years of driving
I installed one on my C230 sedan, not difficult but time consuming (you have to take the bumper off and to get to a couple of screws you have to remove all the interior pieces in the trunk) Start to finish it took me about 4 hrs as I and ran into some problems because I have a Canadian spec car with reinforced bumpers (US car have weaker ones) I had to adapt it (i.e. cross bolt it which meant I had to remove the internal metal stiffener It works great as I tow my Catamaran and use it also as a bike rack. You do need to get a powered converter (bought from Uhaul for $50) and you can get power from the rear fuse box from one of the empty slots

here are details of the hitch that I posted in 2007

The proper part number for a c-class sedan is:
Curt 11824
or
Da'Lan 25752

This is what it looks like and instructions are: http://www.hitch-web.com/proDescrip....e=502729&OID=8

For those that are interested the hitch sold by JC Whitney part#ZX289169 is the correct Curt hitch for both the Sedan and Wagon. I had them check the part number with the Curt factory number (11824)

This is by far the cheapest place for the part. On eBay Curt hitches has a company store and they are selling it for $199 +$35 shipping and here in Canada the best price I could find was $335 +tax.

JC Whitney price is $125 and if you enter the code SAVENOW in the web specials you get free shipping

To save you the time, here is the link to buy http://www.jcwhitney.com/CURT-CLASS-...2360_10101.jcw
the photo that JC Whitney posts is not what the hitch looks like, the link for hitch-web is the exact copy and you can download the instructions

do an "advanced" search for tow-hitch and user-name: Justinius7

I believe he had a thread going with tow-hitch type questions for his old C-Coupe.

I don't believe he is looking for a hitch for a C-coupe as the initial poster has a C240 and C55

I understand that.
But Justin's thread can provide clues and links to tow-hitch products that he can apply to his C240.

Links on this forum (or the internet, for that matter) sometimes requires searching and independent research. Not just simple hold-your-hand answers.

People in the states don't understand what the cars are capable of. Ask your parts guy if he lists a hitch for a R129 SL. I saw one towing a single horse trailer a couple weeks ago while over in Germany.

Thanks for all the help. I actually called JC Whitney today, they can get only get one in 4 weeks, I need it installed next week, so I am going to have to shop around a bit to find one by the end of the week.
There are some guys here in the Cleveland area who will do the installation, I just don't have the time or tools to do it myself.

You're right, I am from south africa, and my dad use to tow a caravan with his 1988 230 4cylinder benz, and that did not seem strange at all.

I bought a tow hitch from JC Whitney and never installed it on my car because I ended up selling my R6 which I was going to tow. I still have the tow hitch with no use for it. If anyone is interested......

Does anybody here know German?

Seems like the magic keywords to search for are
Anhängerkupplung and W203 on http://www.ebay.de/

If only I could read German...

Man I want a hitch on my coupe so bad!!!

Maybe someone can make sense out of this European parts catalog (start at pg. 194)

According this post, the tow bar part # is B6 685 0034. However thats listed in the catalog for CL203 (matching electrical kit part # is B6 685 0035). Is that the coupe in Europe? I don't know the difference between W203, S203, CL203.

Part Numbers

I have a friend who is the service manager for a dealer in Cape Town, South Africa. I sent him my vin, and he sent these part numbers to me. He aslo mentioned a fan upgrade.

1 – Tow bar without harness (MB66850053) – R 4529.84

2 – Electric cable kit (MB66850028) – R 1811.26

3 – Bracket trailer coupling (2038890714/7C45) – R 162.55

use BABEL FISH on Yahoo to translate German text to English.
Just cut & paste into their window.

FYI.... any part that starts with "B6" is an accessory part.
Probably won't find it in the EPC and more often than not it won't be in US catalogs either.

Also, some accessory B6 numbers change every year or two. So what might have been the part # at one time, may have been superceded.
Dealerships outside of the USA though can look up an old Part # and the computer usually tells if there's a new superceded part # for the same accessory.
