Unhappy Poor radio reception

Is anyone else experiences poor radio reception with their new C-class? My girlfriend's C240 (less than a month old) tends to get poor radio reception in general. She lives in the San Francisco area. We took it to the dealership to get it checked, but according to them, all the connections were fine. Is that just a common problem with the Benz C-class radio?

I've had my C320 for two weeks. No problems with my reception (so far).

If it's tinted, metallic based tints can mess it up.

Radio reception is crystal clear, although I am usually listening to my daughter's Disney CD's.

Well, I am the owner of the problem car in the question. What the dealer told me after not fixing my reception problem -- it's getting full signal but the signal in general is probably poor in the area where I am trying to listen, there is nothing wrong with the radio or wiring/connection. When I pointed out to my rental E320 and asked, "How come that car sounds fine in the same area then?" they said, "Do you see that big antenna on the outside of the car? That's probably the difference." I am going to try to bring my car into another dealer.

Higher authority

Anybody know if there is anyone at the MB corporate level that we can bring up this issue to? I know that the dealers don't have any solutions, and the best they can do is replace the radio with the same radio, which obviously won't solve the problem.

Is there a standard protocol within MB for handling this kind of problem?

Try this on for size:

When you get bad reception, have somebody in the back seat push on the headliner just above the rear window. That's where the radio antenna is located, it's glued to the top of the rear window. If the reception improves when you push on it, you need a new radio antenna assembly.

When I test drove the Coupe, I specifically listened to radio to check reception. A personal pet-peeve in most cars. The pickup was amazing. In Orlando, it was getting radio stations from Daytona. My Miata which I was driving at the time, and I thought had pretty decent reception, didn't come close. The excellent reception was a big plus for me.

what the hell is this radio stuff you guys are talking about???

i have this new fangled thing, called a cdchanger

personally i am convinced there are only 3 radio stations in philly:

1. the all nickleback/shakira/n'sync/pink station
2. a country western station
3. and news/sports station

XM/sirius is the only thing that can save radio

Actually, can't tint increase radio reception. It creates a greater surface area in which radio waves can be induced from.

Or am i just full of it.

The dealer claims otherwise. The radio reception was pretty crappy. I took it to the dealer to have it looked at. They said the problem was the tint comboed with a faulty connector in the rear windshield. So they replaced the windshield under warranty (Cost to MB ~$1600. I saw the invoice of the parts and the outside labor.) Reception was greatly improved w/ the replacement. Also, the range of my keyless entry was back to normal. Previous to the windshield replacement and after the tinting, my range was only 3-5 feet. BTW, this is a 2001 C320.

MBTech, is this a problem you've seen in the past? We're going to give this a try. I really hope this fixes our problem.

I'm not sure that ALL metallic tints can affect radio reception. I'm sensitive to this issue based on what I've read here, so I've been paying close attention to the reception in my C320 since I had the 3-M midgrade tint (90% metallic) installed. I can honestly say there's been no change at all in reception (or any decrease in remote door opening ability) after I had it installed. So, I'm puzzled.

My tint is metallized, but it's a "dark gray" look, not the 100% metal, mirror-look reflective kind (like on an RX300). I wonder if that's the distinction?

hi guys..i badly need ur help...

i have a 2001 c240, my car is a grey import, no warranties, and no mb dealer in my area. it has been produced in germany in 2000, one of the very first c class.

my stereo has perfect AM and FM band reception, my problem is that i cannot lock/unlock my door unless i point my key to the infrared window on the drivers door handle. otherwise, the keyless entry does not work from any distance, or position. note: my keys have fresh batteries and my car has been like this since it was brandnew.

i hve bcome confused on reading tons of posts of related topics. other ppl say i need to have my keys replaced, others say the rear glass is the problem, others the antenna amplifier......(mb here cannot even point to me the error# in my star diagnostic sheet....probably there was no error at all w/c appeared in d test)

i hve tried to press the headliner but to no avail...... when i switch on my lights though, the red taillights blink whenever i press my key, as if the signal is received but not processed by the cars lock/unlock computer module. i dunno why d red ones blink and not d turn signals, they only flash though whenever i press the key, unlike the turn signals w/c flash once or thrice dpending whether lock or unlock was pressed.

btw, my rear glass has d small external antenna too for d cellular phone.

Radio reception

I recall an earlier discussion about poor radio reception and smartkeys that don't work with RF (only with IR). There was
service bulletin for the sedans (I don't know about the coupes).

I believe the issue had to do with paint getting on the ground
contacts of the radio/amplifier.

Check: http://users.nni.com/allex/info2.htm
and look at # 6

my antenna amplifier was replaced by the service center today which corrected both the poor reception from radio and the remote transmitter
