Brake question?!

So i got an '05 c230 and i just started hearing squealing today (i assume i need new pads?!) lol...so i've heard alot about porters, akebono, and EBC...anyone have any recommendations and do i have to replace rotors when i replace the pads??? cuz thats like 300 i really dont want to spend right now...

If i do have to replace rotors, im gonna go with aftermarket so i can get some lighter ones anyone have any recommendations for that as well?

squealing means you probably just need to wash them off. Mercedes pads do not have a metal clip that is designed to squeal when the pad is worn. It does have a pad wear sensor on the passenger side that will show you in your instrument cluster when your brakes are worn.

MB recommends replacing rotors for ever set of pads. I changed my rotors every other set of pads and didn't have any problems. Not sure if any of the aftermarket pad manuf have a correct size for the 2005 sport sedan. There's a huge brake pad thread, you should look in there.

Not many options as far as rotors go. Plus, lighter rotors that are not 2-piece is a very bad thing. I would stick with OEM. They should be about $120/rotor from the dealer.

I honestly haven't seen any 2-piece floating rotors for the 2005+ C230's (12.9"). You should also check to see if you have the 2 piston fixed calipers or the 4-piston fixed calipers. Pads are different.

All of this info is in the brake thread. No options that I could find for 2pc rotors. And, about the only 2 piston pads you are going to find in the performance arena will be EBC. Others have had good look with Morse ceramic pads. There was a guy that did a review of them on here several months ago.

This change rotors with every pad set is an American thing. MBSA & Germany say change discs (rotors) when they have reached minimum specified thickness. I know people that are on their 4th set of OE pads on the same rotors on the W203.

i agree- i always mic them to see if they are within spec (this car as well as others i own and have worked on) and go from there. if there is no vibration in the pedal- i don't even have the rotors turned/cut. it's a waste of money and materials to replace rotors every time the pads need to be changed.

It’s likely prudent to have your brakes inspected owing to their noise - if for no other reason than to verify all is as it should be – and to get an honest appraisal on their remaining life. There’s little reason switch away from MB’s original equipment ATE, Mayle, or Textar pads – unless you’re suffering reduced braking effect during extended enthusiastic operation – or minimizing their inevitable dust is important. OE pads offer excellent initial bite and are easy on the rotors. They’re relatively inexpensive, too.

If the former outweighs the latter for you, Porterfield's R-4S pads are performing well on mine.

ya i cant stand brake dust...it ruins the look of my 19" TSW's and i have to wipe them down every day just to have to do it again in a matter of hours...ya the stopping power is good but i dotn plan on racing anytime soon, so i prefer the look of minimal dust!!!

Thanks John,
I really believe that people are wasting a lot of money & I'm not for one moment suggesting a compromise of safety.
