Umm...so are you saying that this Valvoline crap is OK my tranny?
The Mercedes-Benz 722.6 transmission, also known as the NAG 1 (New Automatic Gearbox 1st Version) or 5G-Tronic, is an electronically controlled (shift by wire) transmission. It is used in the 1997 2003 models.
NAG 1 was the first designation of the 722.6 in it's many initial forms. It has progressed from there.

I find no 236 listing at all for the Valvoline product. Maybe Chrysler were happy with it. Who knows. It has no Benz approval.

Yours is a 722.6 5 speed. Use Fuchs Titan 4134. You need a service dipstick & IR thermometer to get the level right. Standard change = 4/5 quarts/liters - Flush = +- 14 quarts/liters.
See method below & splinter & C230 Sports Coup all things transmission threads for practical tips on level setting.

You are a SAINT!! Thanks a ton.
So, I'm assuming if I can find about 16 quarts of the Fuch's fluid I'll be alright?
What's the BEST fluid for this tranny? I'd like to sharpen the shifts a little bit, if possible. She seems to lag really bad when a little cold, or really lags if I punch it to redline RPM's, and then slowly ease on speed... it'll hang onto a gear and not upshift.

The few fluids that have 236.14 approval all use the same additive pack so the Fuchs is as good as you get.
You might well find that things will sharpen up a little with a full service - filter, oil etc. You can do nothing to change the basic change characteristics. They are programmed into the TCU. This is not a hydraulic box by definition - It's a change by wire electronic box. The cold holding of gears is programmed in to warm up the Cats on the car quickly. The high RPM change up will probably improve but that's also programmed.
The only way to change shift responses is to reprogram the TCU like AMG do. You can't just do the TCU flash because it has to work in conjunction with the ECU. AMG do the whole thing as a package. I guess a really smart programmer could get it right but I would not fiddle. If you believe your car after the service is not behaving as designed then getting the TCU reflashed with the newest 722.6 software is a good idea. A dealer can do that for you with a Star DAS.

Just adding to an earlier post regarding current ATF requirments, the doc below is current as of 01/16/2011. All approved fluids remain, they seem to have just added the OMV brand.
Must say, not an easy task finding sellers of this stuff. Still looking.

What is wrong with RMeuropean that I suggested. You won't find it at your local auto store.

Nothing wrong rith RMEuropean, but their $10.82 lit. is exactly what I just put in the car (Febi 236.10) while their Fuchs if 3353, not 4134 which is what I would do next (236.14).
I am looking for a local store/supplier.

Nein, Nein !!!! They have Titan 4134
Go Benz - 2006 - C230 - Type in fluid - Click on Transmission fluid - All the choices will come up including Titan 4134
You must click on a model like the 2006/7 C230 that has the 7G for this to display.
Good luck

I tried prying the axle off the car, but theres virtually no space for any leverage. The space bewteen the inner CV joint (passenger side) and transfer case is approximately 2mm and there is a 2mm lip surrounding the CV joint. Getting anything wedged in between is near impossible, applying any leverage is next door to impossible. But I do not see any tools anywhere specifically for that? Is the axle supposed to 'pop' out with force (looked at a lot of utube videos, etc...) but nothing anywhere specifically for a 4matic wagon.

The inner joint is a plunging CV joint IIRC. A number of people have changed front drive shafts & boots lately. Let me see if I can find one of the threads.

He has changed front shafts on his 4Matic, front diff oil, front axle seals - the whole works lately. I'm sure he can tell you.

Is the TCU plug different than the AT Adapter plug?
I noticed my indy also used the 4134 ATF (part 001989680310) in the 722.6, along with new filter and new AT adapter.
Also, can I just drain the 4 liters and replace (without filter change) to try to clean the fluid some more?
Thanks

Yes - they are the same thing.
If you don't want the hassle of going through the flush procedure & the box has had normal servicing every 39K then you can do a normal 4-5 quart change & filter. Or if you want to dilute the used oil remaining in the TC then you can just change oil. Do a couple of hunded miles & then do another change with filter the second time.
Full flush is only considered necessary if servicing has been neglected..

Just looked up the plug (w/orings) pn A2035400253
and in the epc it is now referred to as a "Pilot Bushing".
On parts.com it is called a Spacer.
When looking in EPC, with your VIN it's under,
Maj Assem Auto trans. subgroup 095-
FYI y'all.
Pic w/ part # at beginning of thread page 2 I think.

Yes - the Shell 134 product meeting & approved against the latest 236.14 spec is a good find at the right price. Benz now mandates the use of 236.14 products in both 722.6 & 722.9 transmissions.

Gear box oil Problems
Hello All,
My name is Ricardo and i have a 1998 C230 Kompressor Touring sport model with 130,000 KM with an automatic transmission
And recently i notice that the upshift from 1st to 2nd gear and the downshift from 3rd to 2nd gear itīs sometime rough.
So I thought in change the oil and the oil filter for the gear box.
Then a call a Mercedes dealer here in Brazil to quote for this service, and they told me that they need first inspect the fluid viscosity and if they donīt like it they will NOT perform the oil and filter change, because thereīs a possibility that the gear box locks after this service and they donīt wont to take their chances.
Now, question, itīs that true or even possible?
What you guys suggest me to do?
Thanks
Ricardo

They are talking absolute nonsense. Changing the fluid is always the best thing you can do.
