2006 C230 Sport Sedan: Quick Question about installing an aftermarket stereo.

Hi,
2006 C230 Sport Sedan / No Bose or HK system.
I was planning on installing a double-din DVD head unit in the car, until the installer at Best Buy said that I would have to re-wire the whole car because the speaker wires are Fiber Optic.
I recently replaced a speaker, and the contacts on it weren't FO, so I don't know whether the information relayed to me is correct.
Can someone confirm whether it is a straight swap or there's a special procedure that needs to take place to bypass the FO?

Thanks in advance!

I dont have the Bose or HK system either, it was a straight swap for my car, no FO. I wouldn't trust Best Buy, they don't know ****. I got wrong info from a lot of shops before doing my HU upgrade.

The thread Greg posted above has a lot of useful info...

Yes, thank you for the above info. Watch out with Worstbuy, some good, some bad when it comes to audio installation, especially with MB's.

If the rear deck grill says Harmon Kardon then you have to rewire. You can also tell in your sound setting if you have "surround" setting then its the same.

your first mistake was going to best buy. i swear you have to be mentally challenged to work in their car audio dept.

i got a kenwood double din installed on my car and it was a breeze, no problems at all.

I think there is some confusion here, just because you don't have the bose/HK system does not mean its a breeze to swap out the HU, he may still have the factory amp installed which DOES have FO ....

how do you know if there is a factory amp? i thought only the upgraded audio had an amp to power the 8 speakers while only the audio 20 (facelifted w203) powered the 6 speakers....

Hi, I have the same problem with my car. Last Sept. 25th I took my car for the B service. I remembered listening to the radio when I dropped the car off but when I picked it up the radio wasn't on anymore. I thought the service guy turned it off and I didn't bother to turn it back on until Monday night. The radio light would turn on but no sound. Even tried to use the CDC but got a message that there was no CDC. I took it back to the dealer and they tested it. They said the amp was bad because supposedly one of the screws above the amp was gone and when they washed my car after servicing or supposedly it had been missing for a long time, it fried the amp. I thought that was a BS and they put another amp that supposedly be working but I didn't hear any sound, wanted to charge me more than $1900. Of course I said no and as of now, we are trying to find out if this is under warranty, and if it is, why do they want to charge me and if not, shouldn't this be a factory defect if it is happening to a lot of cars? I'm driving a 2006 C230 Sport. Thanks for any help.

how did water get down into your factory amp? it should be located inside the cabin somewhere and im not sure how a screw loose can cause water to get inside the cabin...lol sounds like they have one or more screw loose themselves! and no technically audio stuff is not covered under warranty, its considered a wear and tear item and not necessary to the function of the vehicle. Its considered a "luxury" item. however if they caused it to get fried, I'd question that info! I'm assuming you've washed your car a time or 2 before and your radio worked just fine afterward! lol did you make any modifications to your stereo? that would cause you to be missing a screw!?

are you still under the original warranty if so it is covered. what you need to do is put in the missing screw and go to another dealer and have them replace it. many people on here have had the hk amp replaced under warranty so that should not be a problem. it is located in the trunk on the right side i think but can't remember right now.

Yes, the car is still under original warranty and we bought an extended warranty that will expire 2012. My husband looked at the little brochure that they gave us for the MB Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty and it says on item 25-----"AUDIO SYSTEMS Head unit (Radio, Cassette/AM/FM/Weatherband), Speakers, Audio amplification system, CD player and changer and antenna motor."

The service rep said that we were missing one of the plastic fasteners for trunk gasket. He showed me that it was missing so when they washed it, water got in and fried the amp but there was no sign of water in the compartment. Well we know we washed the car a few weeks ago before taking it for the B service. (My car doesn't get dirty too much since we don't drive it too much and it is garaged). He also said that it had been missing for a long time since the indentention where the fastener was was a little whitish. I told him I would had noticed it missing since I'm the one who cleans the car since I'm the one who drives it. I think he just wanted to take advantage of me because I'm a woman. He didn't even look if it is still under warranty which shouldn't be hard since the company merged with the dealership that we bought our car from here in the Sacramento area. My husband will try to talk to the higher ups tomorrow to see if they will replace it under warranty. Thanks a lot guys.

here is what i would do if they don't help you make sure it is dry around the amp and no stains or signs of water. then go to a different dealer and it will be covered under original warranty no problem. good luck hope you can get it fixed without any problems.
