noticed change in engine temp

guys. tonight i noticed for first time a deviation in the temperature of vehicle. For past 1200 miles, the engine temp has read in between 80 and 90 but tonight it went past 90 for a brief bit and fluctuated between 80 and 90 for rest of drive. Is this normal? or am I paranoid?
Thanks

Yes, it's normal...

...won't comment on paranoia.

I have a different engine than you, but mine seems to run close to 90 all the time. Do you realize that the next mark past 80 is 100? Are you sure you don't mean it went up to 100?

I realize that kinda sounds like I'm calling you stupid, but I'm not. Just wanting some clarification.

matt.... i know u aren't calling me stupid. The problem is that i wasn't going in a stop and go traffic. I left my house and got on I75... did 120 down 3 exits.... and it started to get high..... It got close to 100 degrees. The rest of time it was short drive through city and it fluctuated around 90. It has never acted up like this and i am thorough enough when driving that i check all my gauges frequently. (I ruined a 190 once because i wasn't paying attention..... haha....she was my first benz).

That's kinda strange that it got hot while you were going 120. It shouldn't run that high of rpm's and you should also get plenty of airflow. Unless you were drafting someone, it does seem kinda strange that it would get that hot.

Yeah, I sometimes pick up some debris drafting off the back of Michael Schumacher. Yeah, I wish.

ummm..... no debris there. The car isn't a daily driver...just driven at nights whenever I feel like driving. She gets washed weekly and trust me.... the radiator gets a good gentle hose down. THe only thing I could think of is a wild animal getting inside my intake..... what do you guys think?
matt... u are lucky..... send me some of that debris you pick up... lol

one of the things I dislike about the car is that it doesnt show the temp gauge on the screen by default. I think the temp gauge is pertinent data. is it not?

Yeah, I wish it was showing all the time also. The one time that I had a problem, I was experimenting with a cone filter and it fell off. I assume it stopped the fan from turning, luckily it didn't get caught in the belts. But the temp screen didn't pop up until it went over 100 degrees. Luckily I was very close to home and I just kept on going and it didn't really go above 100.

Although, the other way to look at it, if it were showing all the time, would there be a warning on the screen. I assume there would be, since it's MB and they like to warn you about everything. But it was nice to have the temp guage pop up when I had a problem. It caught my attention immediately.

I don't think it came up in red, but I don't remember for sure. It also came up with a fault for "Coolant - Visit Workshop" or something like that.

which the only way to do that is to switch to that particular screen manually. no i'm not being lazy

but I usually leave my display on the AFTER START/trip data/fuel economy screen...
