What would you do to get the steering wheel color you were expecting?

I posted to in response to this thread(Color of Steering wheel C7 no C7)

https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w203/3342-color-steering-wheel-c7-no-c7.html

I have spoken to MBUSA, and they have told me that MB has changed the color of the Steering wheel and shift knob in Oyster interiors regardless if you order C7 option or not. It used to be black/dark grey(like in the C-Class brochure), from now on, it will be a tan/taupe color that matches the top section of the dash. I hate the new color and I really want the original color I thought I was gonna get when I ordered it.

What would be your course of action? Please advise. I will not rest until the parts are changed out.

Any takers?

Of course the complication and liability surrounding the Airbags probably means we both would have to go to the same dealer on the same day to do a swap. I don't know that I would trust anyone other than an authorized dealer to mess with airbags in a warranty period.

P.S. The Airbag alone is almost $1000 new.

I think that you're going to be very tired, if you're not going to rest until it's swapped. If you check the brochure, and any paperwork that you signed, I'm sure that there are legal caveats on it for, "car is representative; colors, options, etc. may be changed by manufacturer at any time without prior notice" or some other legal mumbo jumbo.

I don't think that you have a leg to stand on, to tell you the truth. I'd assume that most oyster buyers would want the color change, as it gives a more monotone color, which seems to be the current trend.

If the dealer wants to make you happy by doing it, fine, but as you said, it's a pretty expensive thing. No harm in you asking them, though.

I realize the law is in their favor, but I am wondering if MB really cares about making me a happy customer, one who will buy with confidence in the future. The dealer has offered to help me by offering parts at cost (which is more than I would expect from them, since they had no control of the situation). Even still, the parts at cost are eye popping. I plan to write MBUSA to see if they can sympathize and at least cut me a little slack, after all I did give them 31,000 dollar bills. This is a tough situation that really put a damper on what should have been a great buying experience. Why couldn't they wait until 2003 and show people what they would be getting in the new brochures? That is what has me frustrated, even though they cover themselves with disclaimers, I see it as false advertising.

The fact that the wheel and shifter were black seems strange to begin with. It must be a coupe thing, because in my C240 with java interior, the wheel and shifter (6-spd) match the upper dash and I think it looks good since the wheel is right there near the upper dash. A third color would look somewhat strange. I'm sure oyster in the sedans is already configured the "new" way. The steering wheel in the coupe is different, so maybe they only had black to begin with (saving money?). Anyway, you may actually like it better with time.

I also find it false advertising that they list portions of the C7 package on their website as standard.

DR. I hope you got my private message reply. let me know if you didn't.

In response to MarkL - you may prefer the color combinations you have, I prefered the combinations that I saw in dealer showrooms and brochures and I ordered based on that. If you saw the car with the colors you have and then ordered it and then it was delivered with a black steering wheel instead of what you expected - how would you feel about that? Not trying to be hostile here, just wondering how you would feel so I know weather or not I should feel this lousy about my situation.

I just saw the picture posted on the other thread, and see that it wasn't just the wheel and shifter -- the upper dash was also the darker color. I misunderstood your initial post. I had seen the oyster interior in the sedan, so I thought the upper dash was already the "other" color (not black/gray).

I can now understand your surprise more. I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe if you had seen this combo first you would have liked it just as much.

Do some people actually have a coupe with oyster interior and a BLACK steering wheel?

None of the C230's I saw while shopping were configured in this way. All the oyster interiors I saw looked like the picture in the other thread (limited edition). The color combo in that picture is one of the things I most like about the interior of the car and that is what I ordered. I hope mine doesn't come through with a black steering wheel.

Benzomonterey:

Does the top of your dash match the color in the "Interior pics for Limited Edition" thread?

Now that I think about it, the C230 at the Philadelphia auto show had oyster cloth with the taupe upper dash, steering wheel and shift knob.

I wanted the combination that Benzomonterey got(Limited Edition post but with black s.wheel and boot), which is what MB was shipping until very recently. Instead I got the combination in the Limited Edition post by Avlis. BTW Avlis, what do you mean by Limited Edition?

I'm glad the steering wheel and shifter match the darker colored upper dash. It all blends together tastefully. The upper dash seemed darker in the earlier pictures I saw.

I test drove both colors (cloth). I almost gave up on the c230 after I drove the first car that had charcoal and auto tranny.

The 6spd and oyster interior felt like a completey different car. So much so that I ordered one.

This is an old picture someone posted:

Maybe this is a hint of a change for 2003....Java interior instead of 'oyster'....hmmmm

Personally, I thought the oyster was far too light, and would show every speck of carpet dirt and dashboard dust.

I guess a cheaper fix would be a dash cap and a Brabus leather steering wheel.

Or prozac....

i think MB might of considered an oyster wheel too easy to get dirty/too hard to keep clean, so they made it a darker color.

i think it looks ok, but would be cooler if it had real stone inserts!

I don't think there's a correlation there. The change seems to exactly match the colors already present in the sedans. They simply changed the steering wheel color to match the color already present for the oyster interior's upper dash area. Java also has a darker dash top and steering wheel, but it's a much different color than the oyster trim. In fact, all the interior colors except charcoal have a contrasting upper dash, steering wheel and shifter (although I haven't seen the blue interior in person).

There is a member here named Limited Edition that had asked me to post pictures. They had ordered the same car.
