4matic Front drive shafts - service or run it till it fails?

Indy is quoting around 1000 bux to replace the 4 boots and service the joint, dealer is about 1100 bux. Car is a 2003 with 75k miles on it and the boots are torn.

I'm wondering if i should dump all that money to service a 7 year old drive shaft or should i just wait till they start to go bad and just buy new shafts (with new boots on em obviously). I can get the new shafts for about 650 each.

What do you think?

Man, that really sounds outrageous for CV boot replacement. But, most CV Shafts will go to 150K, and some beyond if the boot is always kept intact. Hard call, that is for sure. I have over 200K on Jeep Grand Cherokee on the original CV shafts with no issues, and I replaced the boots and regreased at ~110K.

I always thought CV boots and whatnot are "lifetime" as long as they're not damaged? Kinda like the wheel bearings..

my 2003 c240 4 matic wagon also has both cv boots torn they have been for a year at least now Im going to probably just get the boots replaced as its too much $$ for new shafts if I bother i may just run them till they die

my car has 118,000km

Well I was told its a big job to do the inner boots as there is no tool to pull off the clamps on the inner boots. The boots themselves are around 100 bucks total, they want 3 hours per side on labor however.

2003 c240 4matic wagon
was at my local dealer today picking up a part and asked about the boots

this is in canada! boot kit each $37.00 A 220 330 01 85

labour he said was about 2 hours a side give or take a bit (this included cleaning repacking and installing the boots

service manager said they usually lasted a long time and if the joints are not clicking yet replace the boots before they do as its cheaper then doing the shafts

Ill look at doing mine myself or wait till the fall and let MB do it

So I just had the boots completed. Cleaned the joints and repacked with the grease supplied in the kit. Technician said joint looked to be in good condition. Total damage was around 640 bucks parts and labor for all 4 front boots.

Can't Indys do this? They do it all the time on fwd vehicles. $640 to replace boots seem outrageus to me. You can probably get it done for under $250 max.
