Out Of Control!!
I'd start with getting a new one.
I've answered this question a couple of times; do a search, and you should be able to come up with the right procedure.

I have no idea what it is officially called. Do a search for the glovebox swap write-up I did; I discussed it there. It's a pretty simple procedure; remove the trim from around the shift boot, then lift up the center console piece that goes around the shifter by lifting up at the front of it, near the ashtray, then tilt the ciggy lighter assembly forward, then you'll be able to slide that whole piece you broke out from the forward part; do reverse with new sliding cover, and you're done.

Kurupt - here's my DIY thread:

FYI - easiest way to find a thread from someone is to get them from the member list, then select the "find all threads started by user" option.
