Check Engine Light on!!!! Just my luck...

Ok first my rear tire randomly blows...then I get a bubble in the sidewall of my front tire and have to replaced them 2 weeks after the rear blows...now as of 2 days ago my "check engine" light came on but no error codes.

I have noticed that it has been not been having the best time starting recently and it does make a slight ticking noise when first started. THe oil is 2 weeks old and the spark plugs are about 2 months.

Any thoughts about what could be going on. I am scheduled at the dealership tomorrow morning but i know they're gonna wanna rape me of what little manhood I have left with them.

Wait your CEL is on but an OBDII scanner says no codes? This is user error.. almost certainly.

you need star or obd reader. The ticking noise is probably the purge valve which is normal. But you need to read the codes or your just shoot blanks in the air.

no i havent hooked it up to anything yet. Just saying that I haven't popped any error messges besides the "check engine" light which shows up next to the RPM hand...ie nothing has shown up in the message screen that usually tells me when something wrong.

I was just wondering if that signified more to what was wrong if it didnt show up as an error message other than the little light that turned on

Well i mean it really all depends...as it was once described to me, "a bubble in the sidewall is like a ticking bomb, you don't know how much time you have, it may be a week or 3 months, but if you hit a big bump with that tire again its sure to blow." so yes I'd recommend to have it replaced.

Go advanced or auto zone and get the cel read to see how bad it is.

maverik, yiou should buy OBD-II code reader. These days, a generic OBD-II reader is less than $40 (e-bay, HarborFreight, etc.) When the checkEngine light comes on, you just need to plug that and you will have a rough idea about what's causing the issue.

I mean shoot they've had my car for close to 7 hours now and still havent finished figuring out what exactly is wrong lol...just got a call back from the guy and he said well the tech still has it and hasn't given me anything to indicate he has found the issue! im like reall?

Most likely, they're bsing you.

I watched the tech inspect my 240 for about an hour, and then did four other cars while my car just sat there. He then charged me five hours of labor, and I called bs. I sat at the window and watched for hours!

Stealerships are utter isht.

Uh oh. I smell a fish. My 2005 and a few others on here have throw EECS codes regarding leaking fuel filler necks. This code would have been "Evap emissions leak, small" or something to that effect. My car did this while under warranty and they replaced the charcoal canister and the purge valve at first - but the CEL came back a few days later. They finally did a smoke test to find the leak in the fuel filler neck. You're probably about to pay $772 for those parts only to turn around and have to pay even more for the real problem. That's my guess. We'll see.

Edit: In the future if you get a CEL, you need to take it to Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts and let them read the code. The car will not pop a message up on the information display for everything, only for the most critical. Then bring the code (format: P0420 for example) and post it here. We can all help with a ballpark diagnosis based on trends. Had you done this prior to taking it to the dealer and posted the EECS code "small evap leak" I would have told you about the leaking fuel filler neck trend before you ever took it in. A consumer armed with information is much more likely to get a fair deal at a stealership than a consumer that goes in blind with a "my CEL is on". That puts the ball in their court - something I am NEVER comfortable with. The leaking fuel filler neck is not a cheap repair out of warranty, IIRC based on Phil's (nlpamg) experience. I can't see why it wouldn't be covered under warranty, though.

well they haven't started work on it yet since they didn't have parts. However, I'm pretty sure the purge valve is accurate since I've been hearing it tick for a bit now. But idk about the rest. So you think I should take the fuel filler neck leak info to them tomrrow mornign?

Mav - thats crap - neither the carbon cannister or the purge valve are major. Take the damn thing away from them. Purge valve is a simple DIY and available for about $60 at RMeuropean. The charcoal cannister might just be saturated because you overfilled your tank.

Buy an OBDII scanner. You will save a fortune.

Just an fyi the purge valves are always to loud lol Mine is the original design and mount and is so fing loud. The one in an 06 loaner i drove also did this that is why they would not replace it under warranty. What type of warranty do you have?

ya i never used to hear it though (as far as I remember). And how much does a new charcoal thing run? and is that something I can take to any repair shop and they can do it? Is it like replacing the fuel filter?

my purge valve is loud but it's not broken. And I don't hear it all the time either. I don't know how often they do break but I haven't heard of any breaking on this forum so far. I think you can just put something soft underneath it to lessen the ticking. Someone correct me if i'm wrong on that, I thought I read that on another thread a while back.

I found both the activated charcoal filter and the purge valve in EPC. Although I'm slightly confused with the charcoal filter as there are 2 listed and seem to differ based on VIN. Can anyone confirm?

My VIN is WDBRF40J25F657570....I believe the charcoal filter I would need is p/n 211 470 03 59 and then 090 for my specific chasis? Am I correct in that? and what does the 090 replace?

I take it the ticking is just coming from all the pipes and tubes stretching due to age causing sag and thus the valve to tap against something?

My (monopoly) money is still on the fuel filler neck as the ultimate culprit. They always point fingers at the charcoal canister and purge valve first is what I've heard.. and that was my experience. Part-swappers are all they are and most of the time they just throw parts at problems without proper diagnosis. It wasn't until I had a little temper tantrum when the CEL came back in a few days that they actually took the time to do a proper diagnosis. The EECS code isn't necessarily specific.
