03 c240 4matic wagon rear brake job problems

Ok just did my rear breaks pads and rotors 2003 c240 4 matic wagon

used akebono pads (rear) part 872 and oem rotors

went fine no problems everything fit

BUT went for a 2km on side streets 40km/h and when i got home the drivers side rear hub was VERY hot much hotter then the other wheels

it was not the e brake as it was not set up yet and pressing it to the floor did nothing

so i pried the pads back and they moved freely enough its dark out now so I cant play with in till the morning but any ideas??

The caliper (rear drivers side) may be sticking.

If not that, then the corresponding valve in the ABS unit may be malfunctioning... but you don't have ABS light on... hmmm

I agree ^ It sounds like the caliper.

Check to make sure the pistons are moving freely & the boots are still intact.

ya but the pads(pistons) push back in real easy with no more force then the pass side requires

Check the other side to see if they are stuck - causing the "hot" side to work harder.

Just a thought......

Might be a stuck residual brake pressure valve in the ABS. First step is to bleed the brakes. Will likely sort out the problem & even things up. This problem can be caused by caliper over return on the cool side as well.

Bleed those brakes properly & report back. It's a good sign that the hot brake pistons pushed back OK.

BTW - caliper over return is caused by pushing the pistons back too far & then stiction between the D shaped seal & the caliper bore. When you brake the D seal distorts instead of sliding in the bore & when you release pressure the piston over returns requiring more fluid to bring the pads back in contact with the rotor. - Bleed those brakes & then jump on them hard. Should push the D seal down the caliper bore. Otherwise dry reassembly of all the calipers is required & blowing the system with compressed air before bleeding. Hope this is not necessary because it's a pain.

EDIT: When changing pads NEVER push the pistons back further in the calipers than what is required to pop in the new pads as this leads to over return problems.

well took them back off both sides

cleaned up the calipers a bit more where the pads ride and put a film of anti-size on the areas seems to be ok now

other then the ebrake which is turning out to be a PITA to adjust

I would still give the brakes just a light bleed. One good squirt out of each nipple.

Good news though!!

Maybe that was dragging?? They tend to rust up at the fulcrum point under the rear seat and cause problems.

As a tip I was told to NEVER push the calipers in without cracking the bleeder to relieve the pressure. You are trying to avoid pushing brake fluid backwards into the ABS valve. Supposedly doing so can screw up the valves/seals.

You will do no harm to the ABS if the fluid is clean. If you push dirty fluid containing corrosion by-products back into the ABS you can do damage.

I think you are good to go. One quick tip. If a pump of the brake brings up the pedal SLIGHTLY then take the trouble to do the bleed. If the pedal takes consistently on push one & two of the brakes don't bother.
