Auto Gearbox Oil Change

My car has been in with my local garage all week while I was away it is a 2002 E320 and I have just bought it and it is my first mercedes and already I am in trouble :-(

Anyway the garage said it was leaking gearbox oil from the sump gasket so they changed it, great I thought best replenish the oil, however not being a merc garage they had no way of knwoing how much oil to put in, so they put in 2 litres, from my understanding the gearbox takes 6-7 litres, yes/no? but a lot would have been held back in the torque converter as he says he only took out 1.5 litres.

Now problem is the car struggles to change gear and reverse gear thumps into action, is this just a case of low oil or should I be really worried?

thanks

Paul

Sounds like it. Takes about 4 qts. with a pan removal. I hope he looked at the trans 'plug' because that's a common leak point that appears to be coming from the pan gasket. You need the correct tool to check fluid level, there's no resident dip stick. As far as I know the '02 E drive train is the same as the C but check there to make sure.

its usually 3-4 liters. Sometimes you only get 3 because you don't pump out all the the fluid in the tq converter. I usually just put back exactly what i pump out. Then use the transmission dip stick to make minor adjustments to the level once the tranny is hot.

Trust me, you'll know when you put too much tranny fluid in. The tranny does not like it when you put too much in. It'll make a hard clank sound when you shift out of park and it doesn't like changing gears.

The gearbox capacity with TC & cooler is a good 7.5 litres. You should get 3 plus litres out of the drain plug & a little more when you drop the pan. The drain plug does not drain the pan completely.

These boxes are critical on level for proper operation.

I thought that was due to low fluid.. When my car was low on fluid it was doing that issue.. But when i topped it off or added more you could say.. It stopped that issue.. but now i have another issue with atf leaking **** I think i just need a new pan gasket.. lets hope

MB 320 CDI AMG
i drive a 2007 320 CDI which is on 130 000km
concerned about what the correct service interval is for this autobox and which mainstream ATF to use
the spec calls for MB236.14
would Shell Spirax S6 be acceptable?

if you want to use Shell, use Shell ATF 134, as it listed in MB Fluid Compatibility List,

not sure about Spirax,

and i wont do experimental things for a vital part like tranny, hehehe
