automatic transmission oil !!! level...help
hi I have a Mercede c320 2002 with automatic transmission and I change the transmission oil...I remove the pan, change the filter. 4 litres has be remove after that I add 4 litres.
Now i want to flush the cooling system, i remove the hose of the radiator, I start (run) the engine and no oil came from the hose.
I check the level with dipstick and is it high enough maybe too high . I remove the drain plug of transmission and no oil there.
What is the probleme
thanks,,,,,

The transmission & engine tubes are next to one another. I will bet you have put tranny fluid in the engine & not any in the transmission. Will find you a picture

This is the transmission filler tube on the 722.6 5 speed auto.

You need a service dipstick for the transmission - not fitted.

You need to take temperature of tranny fluid to set level

Level checking on these transmissions is very sensitive.

Yeah dude get the engine oil drained right away with new filter. Then make sure to correct the transmission level right away because these transmissions are very picky on level.

Trey - I'm hoping I'm wrong but I've seen it happen too often. It is an easy mistake for someone who does not know Benz & does not read the owners manual or even have one.

WWW - Don't panick - You have not damaged anything. DON"T run the engine unnecessarily while 4 litres overfull!! Oil will push through seals & get into the captive crankcase ventilation system.
Just get that cocktail out of the engine & change the filter.

Don't worry - we all make mistakes
Here are the transmission Flush & Change procedures. Flush if oil is badly fouled. Just change if not.

Let us know how it went like glyn said as long as you don't drive the car or run it you will be fine just make sure that you get all the fluid fixed and levels back to normal. And don't fell bad you are not the first to do this and will not be the last we all make mistakes.

Additional info. on red tab
I was about to make the same mistake but luckily came across these photos before pouring transmission fluid into the engine. Many thanks to the person who provided these photos. I had a leak from transmission sump and have just changed the rubber seal on it. It still needs running to see if the leak is fixed.
Just to clarify, the red tab on transmission fluid filler cap is a tamper proof lock. As previously mentioned, you break this tab off and then push the remaining plastic all the way down till it drops out. You will then be able to pull the cap off. If required, a new tab can be fitted when you are completely satisfied with the level of fluid. I've just ordered a dipstick (flexible spring) from an auction website for around 4.50 UK pounds.

Indeed, C320 is a rare model in the UK. I'm not sure how many they managed to sell here. Mine has a very low mileage too. Less than 50K on 2002. Lovely looking car but poor on reliability. In my opinion, it's not one of MB's finest examples.

2001 C320 Automatic
i did the same thing.. dropped the pan and oil filter. ran the car for 4k miles and did another oil change. just be easy on her . good luck. personally i bought 5w40's at walmart every other week. saves money versus buying 100$ of oil and a filter all in one time

Does Walmart carry the correct 5w-40 (e.g. Mobil Formula M non-ESP)?

MBWorld Fanatic!
You want the European formula 0w-40 Mobil 1. The 5 quart jugs are the best deal (Wal Mart) - then for the m271 I also have to get a single quart.

For reference here's the MB spec: http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html
I would just double-check that any extra labels not explicitly stated in the spec description are still okay. As an example, Mobil 1 5w40 ESP Formula M is on the diesel engine spec 229.51 and is not the same as Mobil 1 5w40 Formula M (without the 'ESP').
The 0w-40 sold in all the stores is "European Car Formula" ... I'm pretty sure that's okay but it is not stated in the spec as such ... maybe worth confirmation from others ...
