I just had a leaking front crank-shaft seal replaced and it was nothing like that. I want to say somewhere around 450.00 parts and labor. It may well depend on what is leaking, though. Still sounds high to me.
Glyn -- I will be curious to see how close to right you get, again.

These prices are outrageous - Both leak & lights.
It's either a crank seal or the front timing cover gasket. I would bet on crank seal first.
Lights likely a solenoid.
Recommend taking to a good Indy that knows Benz.

Find a compentant indy mechanic.
Glyn why would you remove the radiator?
You know you can remove the pulley without doing that, even on an auto?
Check the threads on ASP pullies.
Is there something special about our crank seal?
How does it go in?
I got oil leakage too, but at 163K that's to be expected.
I haven't taken the time to determine from where,
but the steering fluid seems ok, so must be oil.
Back in the day, I did the seal on my Toyoter 20R 2.2L
Removed the pulley, removed the old seal,
cleaned the surface good, and lightly tap the new seal in.
Is it any different on our cars?
